Thoughts on this technology? The idea of a brain chip is terrifying but at the same time if it really does work to fix blindness, disabled people and Alzheimer’s and was used solely for these purposes it would be revolutionary and improve quality of life for many people.

quote:

Elon Musk said on Wednesday he expects a wireless brain chip developed by his company Neuralink to begin human clinical trials in six months, after the company missed earlier timelines set by him. The company is developing brain chip interfaces that it says could help disabled patients to move and communicate again, with Musk adding on Wednesday it will also target restoring vision. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin, Texas, Neuralink has in recent years been conducting tests on animals as it seeks approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin clinical trials in people.

Excellent, they only killed 15 out of 23 monkeys in the animal testing run. Will fit in perfectly with the Tesla AI driver killings.

Counter argument: we don’t need to keep artificially increasing the lifespans of sick and elderly people.

Society cannot support it.

The Argus II has been around a while and is FDA approved. It basically converts optical signals from a camera to electrical signals your brain can understand.

Our Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System is intended to provide useful vision to blind individuals severely impacted by RP. It combines a miniature eye implant with a patient-worn camera and processor to transform how you experience the world.

Poverty is relative and fundamentally cannot be ended. There will always, always be people who have less money than other people.

Hunger can similarly never be “ended.”

It doesn’t do that. Theoretically it could restore vision to someone born blind. Or enable a person paralyzed by an accident to walk again

It could improve the quality of life of elderly people who are dealing with dementia but doesn’t extend their life. Just could make it worth living

If you had a child that was blind and there was a possibility for them to see, I bet your tune would change very quickly.

Name a single technology ever where this has been the case.

Of course I would. Which is why individual parents aren’t making policy decisions.

At some point, everyone cannot live forever.

I think this is possibly amazing but scary AF as well. As amazing as it could be and help people that really need it. Imagine the crazy side of it when people start exploiting it. Ok amputee can use it to operate a prosthetic arm and have a somewhat normal life. Wait till someone makes a terminator crazy robot arm with knives hammers and guns and whatever on it.

You think that's what Bill Gates is doing with his money?

Geez some of you are fascinatingly dumb.
