how many yrs is "near future"?

Not sure. I'd think within 10 years. Once these cars get on the road, things will advance rapidly.

don't see it ... they have a recall every 6 months for something they couldn't get right with current technology ... hard to believe they can make a car that can be summoned, or even automatically driven, in even 20 years ...

I can't wait for this time, but I can't see that at all.

I can maybe envision some scenario where this technology is introduced, but not most people not owning cars that quickly.

But I hope you're right.

If we are sniffing the technology then you can bet DARPA has a working version of it.

I'll be looking at the model they will be putting out that is in the $35k-$40k range. My concern is the infrastructure in Louisiana to charge it. As far as maintenance, they will come out to you.

You're mixing two different arguments up here

There are already autonomous cars that have been pretty damn successful

Tesla isn't the only company in the business.

There are already self driven cars out there

They will install a charger at your house and their supercharger network is expanding rapidly so I don't see infrastructure being an issue by the time the model 3 is released, even in Louisiana.

The true cost of the model 3 will likely be closer $22.5k after tax credits and deductions, not to mention not having to pay for gas or oil changes.

How many Billions in subsidies does he need to keep Tesla going? That's my main issue.

I'd think none after a successful release of the model 3. If that release is not successful then that's another story.

I love the replies in this thread that are opining without any understanding of the current state of Tesla or autonomous cars.

Apple, Google, Tesla and other companies are working on consumer autonomous cars.

Google has had a working autonomous car constantly on the road for years now with a million miles logged

Jeremy clarkson summed this up well. At one point the car will need to make an choice. Avoid collision or swerve onto shoulder and hit a child or nun. What does the car choose
