That's the point of the question. There are different scenarios for which to make different decisions. I just don't buy the idea of a car making the right choice.

Just because you are ignorant of it doesnt mean it wont happen. Lots of cars already make decisions for drivers already. Even more machines make decisions on the level of microseconds.

That doesnt mean there wont be any frickups, but there will be way way less than with human intervention... Especially when these cars get to the point of communicating with each other.

I guess I'm old school. But Im far from ignorant on the subject. I will admit the question I pose is a once in a million type scenario

Why are you pretending he is ignorant? It's an interesting, prominent philosophical question, one of a handful that will be encountered by those who design this technology.

Because he loves the idea of jerking it to pornhub on his way to work.

Kind of embarrassing for Tesla that it's taken so long to hit this market. They'll be serious competition by the time they get around to introducing an affordable (to most Americans) electric car.

in this 1 in a million scenario, what do you think has a better chance of deciding the best outcome? the soccer mom texting her best friend while driving, the 80 year old that shouldnt be driving anyway, the 16 year old that has been driving for 10 days, or a processor who's sole job is analyzing thousands of datapoints per microsecond to make the best decision?

Only way to know is to test in a vacuum. But you forgot the human equivalent to the equation. A good responsible driver that also can drive defensive and offensive to fit said scenario. I will take that driver over all. And say it's chosen that this person gets the decision. I admit the 2 terrible drivers you used would fare worse on being able to minimize injuries. Just think it's interesting to see what the OT thought they would program them to do. Guess I should have just said that.

the difference is that when all cars are tied together on a grid, there wont be a need to react to a human frickup that is causing the situation in the first place. every day there are human frickups that cause nearly 100 people to die.

either way it going to be awesome not to have to drive.. IMHO.

Ohh I agree. But I'm 32 and will likely not see this. Mostly due to the amount of poor people

Also does this mean you can't get a car off the grid

I would imagine at some point you wont be able to.

technology moves fast. 10-15 years ago, not many people would have believed you that our primary means of getting on the internet, taking pictures, communicating, etc would be on your cell phone.

It's actually been his plan all along to work his way down from a luxury vehicle to an affordable model. If you have a couple hours, this link below is a fascinating read. I knew nothing about Tesla before reading this.

How Tesla will change the world

I also knew nothing about Elon Musk before reading this. Another great read.

The problem with that line of thinking is that consumer electronics and modes of transportation are extremely different. One is pretty affordable and its potential uses exploded astronomically over a period of about 5 years. The other is a huge investment for people to make, is far more durable/longer-living, and doesn't have a lot of relative improvements to be made that are of use to people.

Id say something that keeps a drunk or texting a-hole from killing me or my family and frees my time to perform more meaningful tasks, is a very useful improvement. Not to mention once AI takes over the roadways, there will be no need for stop signs and stop lights, which will improve travel time, efficiency of the vehicles(cost to operate), etc.

Yeah, but the consumer has to determine that. And I disagree. People aren't demanding their cars to be self-driving, for the most part. It's not like these cars will get you there faster on the scale of something like the Concorde. Actually, probably a bit slower. People also like to have control. The only time I would prefer to not be driving is if I'm drinking, and I can get an Uber for that reason anyway.

The obsolescence is more likely to happen gradually for the reasons I stated as older cars get phased out. That takes time. shite, I still drive a 2001 Tahoe I got from my parents a while back, and I don't have to.

people werent demanding that their phones have cameras 10-15 years ago either. once people start seeing this technology and how it frees you to be more productive with your time it will take off. Right now people dont have the option, so its not something that even crosses their mind. its going to take time obviously, but it will happen. Once its exclusively AI doing the work, travel time will be cut drastically, without a doubt. I cant wait.
