Electric toothbrushes - do you vigorously brush with it or move very slowly across teeth

I've seen people use them in different ways.
Some people brush with them like they would with a normal toothbrush. Vigorously brushing while the electric tooth brush vibrates too.
But I've also seem people hold them virtually still and very slowly move it across their teeth.
Bonus - I still don't have a water pick but hear they are great.

They actually have directions in the boxes on how to use them. You are supposed to hold them relatively still and way looser against your teeth that you would a normal brush. The electric toothbrush should do all the work.

I've definitely been doing it wrong.

I let the sonic waves do the work

I have actually changed the way I brush with one. Went from vigorous to slow. Works much better. Teeth feel cleaner in a shorter time.

I just followed the directions that came with the brush

I brush normally and had no idea I was doing it wrong.
I also floss > brush > listerine every morning so I think my teeth are just fine.

It's the very end of the bristles that do work. When you mash them against the teeth, you are trying to clean with the less effective sides of the bristles.

Very slowly…actually pausing over each tooth. Still takes about the same amount of time as normal brushing.

Apparently I'm wrong, but I figured that was implied and the entire reason one was spending $50+ on a toothbrush. Otherwise, why buy an electric toothbrush to do the exact same thing one could do with a $1.00 brush? While I don't necessarily move the brush "very slowly" across my teeth, I don't brush with the motion I would with a regular toothbrush. Doing so kind of defeats the purpose of an electric toothbrush in the first place.

I hold the toothbrush in place and vigorously shake my head.

Which comports with basic, common mechanical sense. Something my wife apparently lacks.

Other than my wife I really don’t see many people brushing their teeth in front of me

This, according to my dentist.

So they don't get the point of an electric toothbrush

slowly move it across my tooth at the gum line to stimulate blood flow in the gums and let the electric do its thing.
