E.L. Roberts and Co. Catalog

As are most people, my wife and I love the architecture of New Orleans. The architectural details of the past were simply incredible. Well, while looking at some this evening, I came across an old archived E. L. Roberts and Co catalog from 1908. In this catalog you could purchase all of the wonderful architectural items you see in and on the homes in New Orleans (and many other cities.) In some of their catalogs you could purchase the entire front facade for a shotgun house.

Sears had entire homes for sale in their catalogs. A lot of homes were built by mailorder in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

As someone who loves architecture, I got to say looking through that book made it move.

And now people move to Ascension parish, pay $1m for a house with molded plastic doors, molding, and windows, and think they're on top of the world.

The facade of my house purportedly came out of a Sears Catalog.

This is cool. I live uptown and my house was built in 1917. Some of these designs are in my home.

A friend of mine grew up in her family home on Jefferson Hwy close to Essen Lane that was bought out of the Sears Catalog and shipped downriver before being brought to the site by mule teams. It included everything including nails, wallpaper and it had a basement. Cool old house that her grandfather bought out of the catalog somewhere around 1920.

I lived in a Sears home in college. Most of the houses in the little neighborhood were all sears houses.

That was pretty cool. Reminds me of the old little houses in the Houston Heights. Reading the catalog you can see how people came up with all the little customized varieties on the same basic frames.
They also supplied churches and, apparently, Satanic Mason lodges. Check out the all-see eye stained glass they could order for their evil witchcraft halls:

My grandparents house came from Sears. The beams and trussess on the wood in the attic had Sears & Roebuck stamped on them. They lived about 400 yards from the train tracks and it was delivered by train.
