El Niño / La Niña: Real or Not?

When is the last time you heard anyone mention El Niño?
When I was a teenager, about 25 years ago, the weatherman couldn’t wait to tell us we were in El Niño. I don’t think La Nina even existed back then. If it did nobody ever talked about it. It affected everything from summer storms to winter weather.
Now, nobody gives a crap if it’s here or not. Was it all a lie the whole time or is there some reason it doesn’t matter anymore?

El Niño and La Niña are very real and very much impact our weather. El Niño just ended and we are now in a neutral phase.

Here where the term El Niño comes from:
The strength of the El Niño or La Niña can vary widely.
I feel weather forecasters overplay this. They use it like a crutch, so as to explain something that is happening, but it is not really affecting anything. Yes, I do believe El Niño and La Niña events can be strong enough to affect worldwide weather patterns, but the severity of it is more that just looking at a map and saying, the water temperature is rising in the Eastern Pacific we have an El Niño year coming.

In American Spanish, the capitalized term El Niño means "the boy". In this phase of the Oscillation, the pool of warm water in the Pacific near South America is often at its warmest about Christmas.[4] The original name of the phase, El Niño de Navidad, arose centuries ago, when Peruvian fishermen named the weather phenomenon after the newborn Christ.[5][6] La Niña, chosen as the "opposite" of El Niño, is American Spanish for "the girl".

Meteorologists talk about El Nino and La Nina very regularly.
If you mean pop culture and regular newsmedia, everything they hype up is more or less bullshite.
See: white privilege, West Nile virus, Superstorm Sandy, anything said or done by Donald Trump, satan worship in the 80s, Y2K, #Metoo, etc etc
Doesnt mean those things dont/didnt exist. Just that the media/culture exaggerates or misrepresents reality all the time for just about everything.
