Screw men's journal for posting a stock photo of a random watch for this story.

Better LINK with actual photos of restoration.

I'm guessing they gave the guy basically a whole new watch.

Great story in the link provided. Yeah, both the guy who found it and the Rolex team who restored it deserve a ton of credit for doing such a fine job and finding the owner to reunite him with his watch.

That clean Rolex in the OP/top of the article is unrelated to this story. It’s a picture of a random watch for sale in the Uk.

ETA: a picture of the actual watch is in the OP now

If it's the one I think it is, surfer found it, pretty cool online search to find owner. Australia I think.

IIRC, Rolex replaced most everyrhing... taking away a very badass patina's dial. Rolex AS I hear is a pain in the arse.

Just make sure your crown is completely tightened before going into water though

If you had water intrusion on a Sub or other Oyster case Rolex you had damage to the seals beforehand. The seals on the Sub and most all dive watches work just as well with the stem open as they do closed. Most screw down crowns are just to protected the stem from getting bent. the stem cross section is remarkably small.

well that's disappointing. I didn't click the little i. Lazy journalism to not even include photos which is what everyone wants to see

ETA screw men's journal. I found a better article with actual photos.

I wonder how much of it is original now? What parts were salvageable?

Fine timepiece, but that is akin to saying a BMW 5-Series/Mercedes E-class is the best automobile ever produced.

He qualified it with "practical". Not hard at all to support his argument. That one is a three hander and doesn't even have a date complication, but as far as doing what it is supposed to do and standing the test of time, you'd be hard pressed to find something all around better. I have plenty of watches that cost a good bit more than my 16610 Sub Date from 1989, but that is one that I will never sell.

Wristwatch revival has become a new random favorite youtube channel of mine. And I still don't have a luxury watch of my own, just enjoy the hobby. I could see myself getting into restoration one day as an old man hobby.

Lost a G-Shock in New Orleans during Mardi Gras one year. Had a new one that Monday that I’ve worn pretty much every day since. That’s all I got…
