I must have missed the MEMO that what Spade said was racist.

Maybe a critical take on his failed movie, but nothing racist about that.

Maybe Murphy needs to pal up with Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton and Louis Farakhan and join them in finding racial issues EVERYWHERE.

Wow. He is REALLY struggling then. To go that route. He really is not getting any attention.

By today’s standards that joke being racist is a stretch. By the standards then?? shite. You could still do blackface then.

Damn Eddie must really not be able to write jokes anymore. If he could he’d be making a killing if he did a comedy tour.

So I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of, I thought — I felt it was racist.

Eddie Murphy is one of my all time favorite comics and comic actors.

This is utter and complete bullshite. Spade's schtick is to torpedo everyone. Rich, successful celebrities are supposed to have broad shoulders and thick skin. Spade was even firing at pre-social media viral sensations like Joey Buttafuoco and John Wayne Bobbitt (technically civilians in this context).

So, did his feweens get hurt? Maybe. If he was/is a pussy. Is there any universe where it was racist?

Not at all. Not remotely.

And Spade says this at the end, which made me laugh.

quote:

“Everybody in showbiz wants people to like them. That’s how you get fans. But when you get reamed in a sketch or online or however, that shite staaaangs. And it can add up quickly,” he added.

He was singled out for ridicule because he made a terrible movie, and felt his skin color was the cause.

Makes sense.

Those Hollywood Minute clips were hilarious. I vaguely remember one where he clowned on Billy Ray Cyrus.

Damn, Eddie, still butthurt about a decades old joke? Nothing racist about it either. How much of Eddie Murphy's career consists of jokes about race? 80%? 90? Vampire in Brooklyn sucked.

I deal with racism and discrimination issues all the time. There is zero basis for Murphy's assertion that it was a "racist" joke. Zero.

Unless, you buy into the specious premise that criticism of anyone black by anyone white is racist.

I would consider it racist to say "I won't criticize or satirize Eddie Murphy because he is black."

A huge chunk if the Raw material that made Eddie famous would be considered racist and grounds for cancellation today. Maybe he should lay low.

Because Eddie “thought it was racist” doesn’t mean that it was.

Whoever wrote the headline did Murphy and all of us a disservice in trying to turn what Murphy said into more than what it was.

Murphy's take, if you actually read and understand what he said, was that the extent to which people gloated in his career slump was a bit over-the-top. He speculated that the phenomenon, not just Spade's comment, was racist.

Maybe it was. People didn't gloat over Travolta's decline, or Christopher Cross's decline, the way they did over Murphy's late-1980s / early-1990s decline. Maybe, though, Murphy was just a much bigger star to begin with, in which case he needs to accept the good with the bad.

I don't read what Murphy said as impugning Spade specifically as a racist. That, again, is on the editor who wrote the headline, and you're free to speculate on the ethnic and religious background of that person.

he is literally quoted as saying it was racist. there is no way, through any interpretation, that in a skit full of Spade absolutely demolishing white people that an included one liner about Murphy could be called racist. this is not on any editor or headline. this is on Murphy exclusively.

Literally everyone loved Eddie Murphy at his peak and most were disappointed in his downward career trend (whatever the reason.)
