That's just flat out pathetic.

Agreed. All of the good athletes are getting their grades fixed anyway so if the nickel corner wants to play, he better stay up late and get that C in art.

damn at our house the limit is 3.0......
any parent that will let their kid play with a 1.5.. ain't gonna be involved at school...
but they will pick up their free school supplies driving a new luxury suv and all 6 kids with new cell phones and shiny new clothes..

Btw, don't other school districts have the 1.5 GPA requirement as well?
This. I'm not sure I agree with such a low GPA, but for those bashing EBRPSS, take note that it's not just here. All those wonderfully awesome school districts surrounding EBR have the same low standard.
From the article:
quote:
Almost all of the districts and school systems across the state already have a GPA requirement of 1.5 for athletes. This would bring EBR in line with those school systems, including Ascension, Livingston, West Feliciana, Zachary, Central, West Baton Rouge and Baker.
Aren't school districts partially "graded" based on graduation rates? Maybe this will keep some kids in school long enough to graduate and boost the district's School Performance Scores, as it seems like this policy hasn't hurt the surrounding districts.

With the new admissions requirements in D-1, lowering the standards to participate is going to encourage kids that may have a legit future to gain a full athletic scholarship to not work as hard as they need to.
Will be a net negative but to be quite honest, I know for a fact grades were and are routinely fixed for athletes so most kids who have 2.0's really didn't anyway.
This is more than likely so they won't get caught fixing grades from here on out.

From a fan standpoint, I'd be pissed if my school self-imposed a higher GPA than our competition...

THIS is part of the reason behind Louisiana being ranked near the bottom in education excellence. LINK
Why any company would move to Louisiana is beyond me. The percentage of uneducated and piss poor school districts unwilling to stand up for academics is pathetic.
In Texas, if a student has just a single class where they are under a score of 70, the student is prohibited from participating in ANY extracurricular activities. That helps explain why the schools there are such highly rated, overall.

I'm pretty sure 1.5 was the min. gpa for sports when I went to an EBR public HS in the 90's.
But look out, the fox news crowd found another reason why the sky is falling!

While I do agree 1.5 is too low, I don't agree with this at all
My question is, why would the GPA not be a state requirement rather than parish? If the LHSAA has a 2.0 minimum requirement, how can EBR be lower?

I'm not sure why there are so many derogatory remarks being made. Do you guys realize that a 1.5 GPA is the requirement for schools like West Monroe, Barbe, Mandeville, Live Oak, etc? The LHSAA only requires that 5 classes are passed and a 1.5 GPA. EBR a few years ago voluntarily bumped their own GPA qualifications up to 2.0. It's not like EBR is now using a lower standard than the rest of the state.
Livingston Parish board meeting in December 2014.
quote:
The School Board also proposed a policy requiring student athletes to maintain a C-average to compete. The policy would comply with the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, which previously required a 1.5 grade-point average, Wentzel said.
Difference is the LHSAA set the 1.5 minimum, not the schools. EBR tried to set a higher standard of 2.0 and failed and is now reverting back to 1.5. I can't speak for other districts or parishes but Livingston is proposing to set the minimum at 2.0.
I would love to see the GPA's of the student athletes at Live Oak compared to EBR school athletes. Wouldn't you? Probably not.

NCAA standards are too low as well. The mission of any high school or university is EDUCATION of it's students. We all know though that sports brings in money and attention, so whatever it takes to be the best.
Standards like these really do more long term harm than good for those marginal kids.

This is interesting. NCLB leaves standardized testing standards up to the state; but they are statewide.
If you fail those tests you do not move up.
Did we just guarantee bigger kids participating in our sports programs for an extended period of time?
What a joke EBR.

My first thought was that this is ridiculous but after some consideration I've changed my opinion. While I think that it's pathetic that these kids can't maintain a 2.0 in high school, I agree with the decision. The more kids we have playing sports and participating in clubs, the less crime we have around the city. Being around positive influences after class instead of standing around on a street corner is a positive for everybody.
