Charter School in Ferriday is going through the same thing. School board is competing against BASIS for dollars but school board doesn't have segregation as a tool like BASIS.
I understand school board's argument but I also think every kid that has parents who pay taxes deserves a decent school.

So, instead of investigating EXACTLY WHY, this school is preforming so well....the EBR School Board intends to deny any new Basis schools AND try to figure out HOW to get MORE than 33% welfare eligible students onto their campus ! You really can't make this shite up ! Little wonder the St. George folks want their own school district !!!!!

Also, I'm sure these complaints have nothing to do with the fact that BASIS is in the proposed St. George area. Pure coincidence.
Proposed? Construction is well underway - right next to Woman's Hospital in St. George.

This is exactly the stuff that motivates a desire to create another city.
The leadership just can't get out of their own way.
Very sad, and what a role to raise kids to look toward.

This.
And EBR Public School board needs more stake holders in St. George. They should welcome this.

Why no complaints about the lack of diversity there?

A Pictoral Representation of the EBR School Board:

That’s because it’s not actually about the kids. All kids aren’t created equal. Poor minority students are more equal. And it’s not “fair”.

To be fair the EBR School board approved BASIS expansion.

For comparison sake, last time I checked, I think it was over 70% of the district as a whole who qualified for free and reduced lunch, which is why EBR eventually just went to free lunch for everyone -- it ended up being less expensive than systems for deducting money from kids accounts and trying to track down non-paying parents.

A really good public school negates the need for a private school - sort of how the success of Zachary and Central public schools resulted in a downsized Redemptorist campus and a completely shut down St. Louis King of France private school.
The School Board is disturbed because a Charter school has figured out how to pry middle class white students away from the private schools.
They are complaining and frustrated because of success. That should tell you about their motives (and The Advocate's motive).

Damn, there’s so much distorted reality in this mindset!
Notice how it’s just assumed that “free lunch program kids” is synonymous with “black kids”. How else do you get to assume that there isn’t enough “diversity”?
So, okay, let’s assume probably 99% of free lunch kids are black, but how many black kids are not on the free lunch program? Do those kids count towards this ethereal goal of diversity?
So, maybe we can also assume that there really aren’t that many black kids in EBR who are not on the free lunch program. If that’s true, then why use “free lunch program” as a proxy measurement for black kids in this diversity monopoly game we’re playing?
The not so subtle ideology at work here is that we MUST have the presumption firmly in place that blacks are perpetual wards of the state, a lower class of citizen, held back by white oppression, and individually incapable of fully competing or even responsibly participating in normal civic activities like enrolling their children in the best schools they can find.
Notice how the article doesn’t mention the method of how this successful school system EXCLUDES the free lunch program kids, or even HOW they attempt to strike the proper ratio. It doesn’t occur to the critics that this school simply may not consider the “free lunch program” status of a child to be a relevant factor - which in any sane world it would not be!

If I were the charter school, I would remove race from the application. Just take the highest functioning kids.
In today's society, I think leaving it off any educational or job application is illegal. We must keep race on the applications so we can tilt the scale. I know it sounds racist, but it must not be. Right?

How most get excluded from all of these schools is do not provide a bus system. Free or reduced lunch kids usually do not have a way to school that isn't a school bus.

Exactly, so you cannot say you didn't know you were only hiring white or asian people. If able to leave it off you can just say we don't look at race and hire only the best but you'd end up with only white and asian and that isn't good. So, you have to have it on application so you cannot ignore it and plead ignorance to race.

St. George is proposed - the school has already been constructed and is about to finish its first school year.

This is almost word for word as the same complaints lobbed at the charter schools in my community. Interestingly, the metric used is always the number who qualify for free and reduced lunch mostly because (at least in the case of our local charters) its a number they like better than white/non white. Well to do non white families (asian, Indian, black, Hispanic) make the school appear more diverse than it is in the eyes of the critics.
Public school people really get riled up by the subject of charter schools. I really do think the movement to get rid of the socialist institution of public schools is gaining steam. Given a choice I’d rather see a society have free health care over free education. Teachers are cheaper than doctors. Either get rid of both socialist institutions or give us the better alternative.
