In Houston, burbs of Houston, a 4 BR house around 200K would cost around $3,300 in property taxes depending on location.

But you have amazing schools as a result in Houston.

A good portion of the state income tax gets redistributed to the local level, so there's not as big of a funding gap as it may seem just by comparing property tax rates. I believe the EBR school system gets about 40% of its budget through appropriations from the state legislature. It's more of a question of what are we getting for that money.

BR schools are bad due to demographics, not funding.

Not gonna lie, we need most of if not all of the projects covered under this tax. It’s a fair plan as far as serving all parts of the Parish. I get the angst, as I too feel COA is an absurdity. BREC and the library system need to be reeled in some for sure.

I’m gonna be on the fence up until I actually vote.

Not mentioned in the OP. The sales tax increase will not apply to groceries and prescription drugs.

It is what it is. Unless St George happens I don't see anything changing.

We pay property taxes and for private school because we don't like commuting from the burbs. If we had more kids we'd probably reconsider but it's nice being close to work.

My wife told me just the other day that her 5 minute commute is worth the cost of tuition

I am rooting hard for Autonomous Driving Cars. I could read or nap or watch netflix on the way to work. Or start working on the way to work and leave early and work on the way home. So much wasted time in cars in traffic.

We lived off of Juban for years and hated the commute. Granted part of it was during the I-12 expansion so it sucked a little extra.

My wife told me she'd take a less expensive house if I'd move her closer to work and school.

I live outside of Seattle, when your property tax bill hits 5 figures (middle-class home), then you can start complaining. Low property taxes are one of the few things I miss about LA (the others are friends, food and Saturday nights in TS)but you get what you pay for...generally.

No way.
30 yr tax and most of the money will be spent upfront.
5 yrs from now when other road projects are needed they will need another tax.

Then regional bridge tax proposal and drainage tax proposal will be coming down the pipeline.

did you see the lawsuit that was filed recently against the EBR assessor? he simply did not list or tax certain Exxon property. one of the teacher's associations filed the lawsuit because it costs the school system tons of lost taxes every year. i'm friends with one of the lawyers that filed it.

You think this is bad??

I own 4 houses in Baton Rouge.... pay well over $10,000 annually in property taxes..................

and YET I STILL PAY to send my kids to private school..

and no, it is not a personal choice, there is no way I would send my kids to a BR public school.

all of this, while having most of the country yell and scream that I should be paying more.....................

Also, LA has really low property taxes. Here's a map to show you who is getting the full fist. Illinois bonus...we also have one of if not the highest sales tax in the country.

We pay for private school too but it's by choice. We could always move to the burbs and use public but we don't want the commute.

Pritzker just won governor and he's working with a super majority in the state congress. The last four years Rauner could at least try to temper things, but what was bad before is now going to pick up full steam toward the financial cliff.

Prizker is the epitome of the Chicago political machine. Insanely wealthy, connected, crooked...you name it. Luckily my new gig no longer has me tied to Chicago so time to start getting serious about the short list of places to move.

States like TX have much lower taxes and strong economies.

LA used to have tax rates in the bottom 7-8 until JBE fixed that for us. Now we are #27.
