The manual stick shift is not a performance-bringer, because an automatic transmission is just faster, you can ask any race driver. But it gives the vehicle character and I kind of compare it to people who love mechanical watches; it isn’t more precise and it doesn’t have any advantage at all but it’s a character feature. So is a stick shift.”

Manual drivers don't care that your automatic goes 0-60 in 2.9 while a manual does it in 3.2 or 3.3 seconds. Sounds very " emotional" to me that your automatic has " bragging rights" by tenths of a second that most will never use on the street.

It's beyond irresponsible to drive these cars to anywhere near there limits on streets & 98/99% of its hours will probably be on public roads.

Wait a few days and post a thread about preferring automatic to manual and that you'd never choose a manual car. I guarantee most of the responses will be that you're a lazy, stupid millennial with a few "this is why this country has gone to shite" posts sprinkled in.

Are you this combative about other car option preferences like Convertible, front wheel vs awd vs rwd, Navigation , etc... ? It seems manual transmissions bring certain people with passive aggressive comments or flat out arguments.

I don't think I'm being clear enough.

I don't give a shite what people choose. It's the "manuals only" crowd that gets argumentative 9 times out of 10. Do you disagree with that?

It is a forum, chiming in on stuff is the whole point. Post about any consumer good or service on tOT and people will be chiming in like Tom Tower of Christ Church at 9pm. Meanwhile, there is a debate going on about what is the most chuggable beverage...

First, keep in mind the quoted text were uttered by the head of BMW's M division.

I never said any choice of car options didn't have an emotional component just that choosing a manual over a DCT or slushbox in a performance car is primarily an emotional decision. Some people like anachronistic things nothing wrong with that but when choosing something out of romance, nostalgia or mechanical engagement it is an emotional choose.

A lot of people in here saying they learned in a night, or in an hour.. i’m wondering how proficient y’all were at driving a standard in that amount of time(?)

It took me a week or two (cant remember exactly, it was way back in high school), practicing with my dad just about every day, to get to the point where i felt comfortable driving a manual on my own and not grinding the gears all the time or screwing up the clutch.. and i already had experience driving an automatic, cant imagine learning how to drive with a stick shift first.

I once drove a '55 Chevy BelAir with 3 gear shift on the steering column.

Maybe I should apply for the job.

Might take me a minute since I haven’t driven one in 10 years but I’d be willing to learn again for $50/hour

Sorry OP for the jack.

I have held a Zeitwerk and a Zeitwerk Minute Repeater but I have never seen a Zeitwerk Striking Time. While I prefer my Datograph I wouldn't mind owning a Zetiwerk Date at some point.

while i love driving cars with a manual transmission and have owned several in the past, i’m currently down to only two cars (mine and my wife’s) and both are automatic.. otherwise would be a fun way to make side cash.

Sounds more like an investment opportunity to me. If you don’t have the cash on hand, finance an inexpensive sedan and pay it off fast at $50 an hour. And sounds like you’ll be a contractor so there are benefits in that part too.

My guess is that most of the posters here talking about how outdated and archaic manual transmissions are have zero clue how to drive one..

I can drive a manual. Had a few friends (millennials) in high school who drove manuals.

They are outdated as hell unless you'd like to argue against facts and numbers that I posted or you hang on to the "but Europe" line.

My manual is too easy to drive to teach people on. Don’t even really have to gas it to move from stopped. It has an electromagnetic brake that holds the car in position for 3 seconds on a hill, up or down. I’ve never ground gears, so I’m pretty sure you can’t. One of the last great cars made non-turbo, hydraulic steering, 6 speed.

Manual transmissions are factually archaic and outdated. There's a reason that almost all super/hypercars don't use them anymore.

Manuals are absolutely fun to drive though. There's no denying that.

How do supercars relate to every day drivers? Just because rock crawlers need a torque converter doesn’t mean I do.

You preferring to drive a manual does not change that they are outdated.
