Dude gets hired for wrong job.

This appeared in the Wall Street Journal as part of an article on war stories from corporate recruiting.
quote:
We had a manufacturing client that consistently had lots of production openings. So we worked out a deal with them: They gave us set blocks of time for interviews, and if we screened a candidate and felt good about them, we could just send them right over to their facility and the candidate could walk in, do the interview and potentially be hired on the spot.
Since we didn’t have an office nearby, we started meeting candidates at a local Panera. One of our recruiters would always be sitting there for that same window of time, and all our other recruiters would line up meetings. Bada-bing, bada-boom.
One day, one of our candidates no-showed, so the recruiter followed up with them:
“Hey, you missed your interview with us.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“No, you definitely did. You didn’t come see us.”
“Yeah, I did. I got the job.”
We’re like, what are you talking about? So the candidate said, “I came to Panera, like you told me to, I went to the counter, said I was here for an interview, I did the interview and they hired me.”
The candidate thought the interview was with Panera, so he interviewed with Panera rather than our client, and got the job! I’ll carry that story with me for years.

At least he’ll get free bread for his troubles

So the interviewing company never mentioned what the job entailed?
And the person applying for a job didn’t specify anything? Just “job”?

So in the end he got hired for the right job?

Wonder if he makes more bread working at Panera instead?

Same question. Also, agree with those who say it sounds made up.

I've interviewed a lot of guys for factory production work. A lot of them are guys just out of jail in halfway houses trying to get any job to keep their PO off their back. 9 out of 10 don't last more than a one pay period, but that 1 is the best damn employee you've ever had. Even then, there's a high likelihood that 1 will end up back in jail or rehab in less than a year.

Is this how Mark Stoops ended up staying at UK?

He's now the CEO of Panera!

Back many years ago while in college, I was interviewing for a job at a gas station. It still offered full-service. Before the interview, I pull up and get some gas and the lady at the pump on the opposite side of me asked me to fill up her car (she had mistakenly pulled into the self serve island).
I filled her car up and she tries to pay me. I tell her I don’t work there, but I am actually there to interview for a job.
She asked if I was a student at NLU and I confirmed yes.
She asks how much will the job pay and I told her that I wasn’t sure, “maybe $4.25/hr.”
She says, “follow me young man, I’ll get you a job paying you $6/hr”.
Gullible me believes her.
I follow her to a discount lumber yard in West Monroe.
I follow her in to the office area and she says to a man, “Fred, this young man is a student at NLU and you’re going to give him a job and pay him $6/hr.”
Fred says, “what’s your name young man?”
I tell him, and he says, “ok. You’re now working one of these registers. When you aren’t in class, you come here. You’re done at 5 every day.”
“Yes sir Mr. Fred”
He was genuinely one of the nicest men I have ever known. And one hell of a businessman. The lady was Fred’s wife. Truly wonderful people.
Anyway, that’s a true life changing story. That job enabled me to pay for 3 semesters at NLU. Without it, no way could i have afforded school. I later transferred to a different school.
I doubt a job at Panera bread today could be very life changing.

I’ve seen several movies that start this way.
