Well it is possible Phil feels that way and the rest don't. It's also possible Phil believes most of the church but just disagrees on that topic. You can attend and not agree with everything.

Everyone was already drunk. That, or they knew it was still water but didn't want to be rude.

People automatically assume that Protestants in the south are all anti-alcohol. Many have come to understand that the Bible speaks of drunkenness as a sin not drinking in and of itself. I predict in another generation moderate drinking will become like dancing. Something folks used to be against but who have realized it is not a prohibition found in scripture.

But many don't and realize this is a mostly American cultural phenomenon and not really based in orthodox Christianity.

So you just made that up then? Alcohol isn't a sin.

How is it hypocritical? Are you saying making wine is a sin? You do realize that wine was the safest thing to drink in biblical times up to the industrial revolution, right?

My great aunt was a hardcore baptist. She never drank. But, she would always say, it's not a sin to drink. It is a sin to drink too much. Meaning, gluttony, or over indulgence is a sin, whether it be wine, food, etc...

There's actually a verse that says sometimes you should put down the water and pick up the wine
The meaning in that it's ok to chill out sometimes
