If you are hellbent on the real ID, there are many "qualifying" documents that you can bring in addition to the SSC, birth certificate, and driver's licence. You need 5 (including the 3 gov't issued), bring 7-8. I'm not shitting you.
The first time I went I was disqualified because my SSC didn't match my driver's licence. So after changing my federal document to match the name on my state issued ID
, I came back with a bill, my fishing license, a check stub, and my tax return.
They rejected my bill and tax return. If I'd not brought more than the minimum 5, I would have had to come back. I guess it really depends on if the person checking your stuff.
All this happened in Arkansas so you may not have to go through this bullshite in La.

This is simply false. The TSA operates the same regardless of what state they are in. They are a federal agency.
The OP has a passport (a federal ID) so he is good.

Whats the back story on the "Real IDs"? Missed it.
Is it like the new "Fatherland" ID that Venezuela is rolling out??...with the help of the Chinese of course.

REAL ID history starts with post-9/11 security pushes on the Federal level and it's attachment to a military spending bill back in 2005.

By 2020 if you don't have a REAL ID you cannot travel by air or go on any military bases, (unsure if this includes govt buildings/court houses)
these requirements apply in all States but check your local one to be sure.

Don't see the issue with getting this. Most other states have had it for a decade.
Passport works fine for flyig but getting this realid is going to happen at some point.

This stuff is confusing because I asked the lady at the DMV and she said by 2020 REAL IDs to fly in the State of NC. So who knows?

Passport will more than suffice. Still, we're talking about Americans moving around their own fricking country.

TSA is a federally run agency with the same national standards at every airport. You won’t need a real ID until 2020.

The Real ID Act is a prime example of federal government overreach.
I applaud LA dragging our feet on this.
Don’t listen to the people saying you can’t fly, I fly about once a month using my non-Real ID DL from LA and have never had an issue.

No. Has to be a DMV.
Not necessarily. You can get a Real ID at Express OMV offices, like the ones in Denham Springs, and on Perkins Rd, and their other locations. Just be sure you plan ahead and bring in all of the necessary documentation.

To get a Real ID license, I have to go to the DMV in-person
I’m dreading this. No way I pass the eye test next time. And I can see fine aside from needing reading glasses. But last time I barely got through it.

Went last week to renew my liscence. Sign side 2020 was when real ID needed. Can up grade for like $15 bucks.

I brought everything. They ended up using birth certificate, driver's license and a bill I think. And maybe one other document.
Show up 45 minutes before the DMV opens and you'll be out 30 minutes after.
