How does someone going mostly sideways go UP?
I dont understand?

that one is really weird.
Coming back from Auburn one day I saw the strangest accident that I have ever seen on 431. A car lost control and somehow got air and broke a pine tree off about 15' in the air at least 30 to 40' off the edge of the road with nothing over there to use as a ramp. I saw no other car involved.

That is some impressive distance. Terrible but impressive.

Maybe a stolen car. Sounds like he was driving wildly.

I am just trying to figure out the physics here... If he didn't go through the windshield, he must have gone through a side window when the car rolled at a high enough rate, then ejected by centripetal force through a broken window.
.
For him to get that high is pretty amazing actually. Wear your seatbelt kids.

quote:I was two cars behind a truck pulling a camper on I12 a few years ago. The camper started fish-tailing violently and eventually spun the whole truck around facing backwards (towards us). The camper was pulling the truck down I12 basically. Camper then went airborne off the side of the road pulling the truck with it.. never came unhitched. Camper was mangled, truck landed on its side. Old couple inside both fine.

now I'm trying to understand the difference between centripetal and centrifugal force...

Can you make another Prius joke? The first two have been hilarious.

Aren't seat belts mandatory front and back? Idiot

Had a wreck in north la last week where 2 of three were dead at the scene and a third was barely scratched. the dead were not wearing seat belts and the third was. seems like sooner or later Darwin would weed out the stupid genes.

Centrifugal force is the reaction of centripetal force. In other words, for the person to keep rotating in a perfect circle, the centripetal force must be equal to the centrifugal force.
In this example, the car rolling at a certain angular velocity will cause the person inside to move to the edge of the car (here the window). His linear velocity (relative to the car) squared divided by the distance from the center of rotation will give you the centripetal acceleration. F=ma, so the centripetal acceleration times his mass equalled the force against the window. Once the force became too high, glass breaks, and nothing holds him back anymore- he goes flying.

I thought a Prius was speed limited to 35.
