It's an interesting argument, I agree with you but think a lot of folks would use this same exact line regarding drinking & driving

Fair enough .. I would push back a little though, and say that phones have a use in society .. simple communication, GPS, your daughter's ability to call for help if driving back to LSU from home and her car breaks down.... Alcohol , while there's not a thing wrong with partying and having fun (if not driving) doesnt offer as much in the way of usefulness... unlike a cellphone .

Life would be better for everyone if nobody drank alcohol period.

Would also be better if no one ate fast food, had social media, didn't gamble, etc. It might be hard to believe but the majority of people can enjoy things bad for them in moderation.

Right, both are a problem when in use while driving. For normal people, neither are a problem to manage.
I'd rather be surrounded by 10 vehicles on the highway after the drivers have had 1 to 2 beers, than 10 with all drivers on their phones.

You seem to have your mind made up, so im not here to convince you of anything .. but you said 'in use while driving'.. to me that means on your dashboard giving you directions.. or enabling hands-free calling with your boss... of course, scrolling on YouTwitFace or whatever its called is a WHOLE different deal..... and ill take the 10 vehicles with drivers "on their phones"- normal use- than the ones buzzed on a beer or two, every single time .

Drinking before you actually drive or drinking while I’m physically driving?

You're not 100% wrong.. but they are two very different things .

As mentioned, to me for drinking & driving - zero tolerance, no drinking then driving .. End of .

With phones, one can be responsible, set their phone on a holder/charger on the dashboard, and use Google Maps or another app for directions.. or can have a hands-off conversation with a coworker while driving... that's totally different than holding your phone, texting, checking social media et al.. but but all the things I mentioned fall under "using a phone".. it's a more complicated issue to deal with than drinking & driving imo .

In either case, with normal people, you shouldn't have problems.

The reality and difference is there are more people on the road using their phones improperly than there are impaired drivers. I have a 20 minute commute between home and work. I have never made that trip without coming across at least one idiot causing problems, that happen to be on their phone. It's usually multiple, doesn't matter what time of day or night.

we survived for a century almost of mechanical driving without a phone screen pressed to the face. Put your phone down and pay attention to the road. Whatever it is it can wait

Is this serious? cigarette smokers are below drunk drivers?

I think drinking and driving just kinda happens…. No one sets out to do it.
By the time you’re too drunk to drive , you are drunk enough to figure you got it!

Drinking and driving wasn't considered a big deal back in the day unless you were falling down drunk.
MADD changed that (one of the few female activist causes women actually got right)
