Large pieces of the wreckage from the crash remained visible Tuesday evening from the eastbound section of the bridge, but Wilson said that, as of Wednesday morning, the bulk of the debris has been removed or is in the process of being removed. Once it's clear, workers will clean the bridge, then the inspection will begin.
The timeline for reopening the bridge will depend on the damage uncovered by the inspection, Wilson said. If there is damage that requires repairs, Wilson said DOTD should be able to address it quickly.
"We have all of the tools...to begin an immediate repair if necessary," Wilson said. "We just don't know what the repair may be or if it's needed."
Bill Oliver, DOTD engineer administrator, said the crews were setting up to do the inspection as of 10:25 a.m. Wednesday. He said there were still some ongoing cleanup operations as well.
Oliver said a major concern in the inspection is fire damage to the concrete and whether it was severe enough to break down the actual road.
Rodney Mallett, communications director for DOTD, said the inspection is necessary for public safety. He said there have been inspections in the past that have uncovered severe damage that required bridges to close.

Just make the other bridge single-lane to accommodate both directions of traffic.

That would last like less than a minute before a wreck happened.

I don’t understand why it’s taken so long to clear the debris.

Looks like roasted bananas to me.

Might be because its on a pretty narrow bridge and the fact that they need big machinery and trucks to clear everything. You wanna see a big rig try and three point turn on that bridge... just spitballing tho

Is it really that terrible of an idea? It would take a few hours to lay out cones and put out temp 45 mph speed limit signs.
No truck/bus traffic, just passenger vehicles. Others will take 190 detour.
But we'd need a study to make this happen.

Isn’t this why they have those crossovers, though?
There’s one about 2 Miles from the Whiskey Bay exit, where the crash occurred, roughly.
I guess using those crossovers to get equipment there would slow down the other side considerably.
I don’t know. If they weren’t pulling out all the stops to get this cleared ASAP, that seems like malfeasance to me.

Would be real exciting in those places without shoulders.
In the future they’re going to have to set up a system where they can issue automatic tickets for speeding on that bridge, without having a cop there to pull people over.
I don’t like that kind of thing, but that bridge is a big problem.

It's 3 lanes wide. A couple front end loaders and a steady stream of roll-off's would be done in short order.

Where would you cross over to do this???

My suggestion would be the crossovers...but that's likely too easy.

That works as long as there aren't hazardous materials involved. I don't know the contents of the trucks involved (other than bananas) but even the spilt fuel would cause a big issue and slow down the cleanup.
Also, if there are concerns about the structural stability of the bridge, which it seems there are, you don't want to just line up a bunch of heavy rolloff trucks and equipment. You would want to work slowly with min additional weight on the span.

Suggest a barge that ferries people. Should be an engineering possibility.

It doesn't take 2 days to remove a trailer carrying a hazardous substance.

I'm not suggesting they lay it directly on the affected area.
