Last I checked we were free to set our thermostat to whatever temperature we desired.

Nope, I pay my power bill not you and I will not conserve energy so that Pedophile Joe Biden give it welfare queens and illegals. My house stays on 76 around day and night because I work outside and and cooler is uncomfortable for me. Sometime crank it down to 74 on weekends. I do what makes me happy not the government.

Friend,

You are absolutely correct. Even though Mother becomes irrationally angry when I increase the thermostat to 85 degrees, as the Department of Energy recommends, I go behind her back and do just that.

Uncle once asked me why I insist on doing it. I told him, “Americans by and large are obsessed with satisfying the flesh. Whether it is shirking work by using a blower when a push broom will do, drinking alcohol, or fighting nature by maintaining a delta temp of twenty degrees from the outside world, we fight for comfort at our own peril.

“It is both a matter of conservation and national security that we do not waste the precious gift of energy. We are given the liberty to adjust our home temperatures as we please, but liberty only exists in a world where duty exists first. A people who value liberty over duty will quickly lose all liberty.

“It is our duty to use the gifts of this world in a responsible manner. It is our duty to ensure that the weak and forgotten come first. It is our duty to ensure that our power grids are not overtaxed, which can cause outages or brownouts. It is our duty to conserve our natural gifts for future generations.”

Uncle seemed convinced by my impromptu soliloquy. He responded, “There are entire generations of Americans that are so self-absorbed, repulsed by the notion of self-sacrifice and the common good. How ever did you become as you are? I will help you in your quest.”

Ever since, Uncle has helped me set the thermostat at 85 if he is at our house when we leave. There have been several comical incidents of us scheming to get back in the house to adjust the thermostat, stories for another time, but so far, we have been largely successful.

I hope more and more Americans will jettison the idea that their “liberty” and personal comfort are the purpose of their lives. The purpose of life — to serve, love, and enjoy God — requires habits that reject fleshly pleasure and increase our practices that help us see the world not as our playground and rightful conquered territory but as God’s garden, which we tend as a joyful duty.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

People around here will say you're crazy and brag about freezing their house out. But yeah we do 75 day and night pretty much year round. Turn it down to 74 if we're working hard inside or something. But generally don't like to be chilly in the house and we're warm blooded

When we are on vacation, sure. I put them on vacation mode which is 85 or 55.

If I am just leaving for a few hours, nope. The program runs like normal.

Nope, comfort is not one thing I will sacrifice. 72 during the day, 68 at night.

I'd probably take 85 here in a few days - power is out (storm) and so is my water. We haven't even seen a glimpse of a power company vehicle and the damage is stout. I'm the only customer on my line, which is about 500 yards from the highway. It is across the parish road in three places and all over my driveway.

Fortunately, I filled up two stock troughs with water before the storm (good for toilets and maybe the outside shower I might take if we go 5-6 days without. Unfortunately, I didn't get my contractor to come out and put a generator on the well.

Radical Idealism has its consequences, but I’ll let the radical idealists pay for them, not me. You go do your part.

From my HVAC buddy with years of experience:

72 during the day..
whatever we want at night. (For us is 68)

*a tip he taught me: if you set your thermostat too high at something like 76-78 during the day, your HVAC system will work harder to bring it down later than it will to just maintain 72ish.

**so that sounds about right with the liberals. Don’t hog the power for others and get ready to spend $15k when your units go out from working too hard. Are the people suggesting this going to pay for my repairs?

Is everyone's units constantly running with this heat wave? I'm maintaining 72/73 but it runs from 6:30 AM to about 9:30 PM

Not constant, but they are not happy at all mid afternoon

72 ain't bad

If the kids complain it's hot I kick their asses outside, after a few hours the house will seem nice and cool

The reverse also works when they complain it's cold during winter.
