My wife did this for her nieces this year. Her main reason was she felt that past gifts were never appreciated.

I think this happens more often than not (gift not being appreciated). At a certain age it becomes difficult to buy for people. Kids like anything you give them, but then once they get to the age where they like all the "trending" things, its hard to keep up with all that shite... My mom decided years ago to give her kids money and I felt it was a good move because, while appreciated anything she gave me, she isn't the best at picking out gifts for people so giving money isn't really wasting money..

We considered doing this for adult family members this year. But we would let the family member decide which charity it is that they would like to donate to. We are still giving money to the kids in the family. In no way do I see donating to charity a selfish act and I'm a little surprised that other people on this board would feel shafted that they didn't get a gift from a family member. To me that is what sounds selfish. In the end, we all decided not to exchange at all and just enjoy Christmas without gift exchange.

the issue here isn't that they are donating to charity, that in itself is a great thing.

The issue is that they are doing it so they don't have to put a second's thought into actually buying a gift for their loved ones, adn took the lazy way out instead. Everyone loves presents, whether you pretend not to or not, it just makes you feel good. It's human nature. So getting a card that basically says "yeah, instead of getting you an actual gift, we took what we WOULD have spent on you and gave it to someone else". It's a slap in the face.

It's even more fricked since these people are apparently rich. Give to charity anonymously in your own time for the cause (not the recognition) and still devote a little something to your family.

If your brother and wife would've given YOU cash instead of giving it to charity, would that have been acceptable? Or is that still "selfish and lazy"?

I am glad that I asked The O-T about this. I appreciate the insight some of y'all have shown.

I am now sorry I called them selfish. Now I feel like I'm the selfish one for saying that.

I still think it is kinda lazy, though.

Thank you.

Giving to charity is great but this comes off as pompous and lazy. They're getting a tax break off of the entire family's Christmas gift. If someome in my family is donating money on behalf of me and my wife and kids great. I get to pick which charity it goes to and I get the tax benefit because after all I'm the one making the donation right?

we did this a few years ago, pissed everyone off. so we stopped doing it.

We didn't just donate though, we also gave presents. Just smaller ones.

Our thinking is that christmas was just turning into everyone giving everyone gift cards, whcih I didn't really like. So we thought we would try it.

We still give a donation in a few people's honor, but in addition to our gift.

That should absolutely be the only way to do this. No reason it should be in the name of the person giving the gift.

Looks like your brother and his wife provided a nice Christmas bonus for some non-profit's administrator "compliments" of you and your family.

My dad did this one year for my extended family after a family argument the previous Christmas. He got the reaction he wanted out of them.

This is how i felt during the floods. People were posting selfies and pics of what they were doing. Most of them were doing it for the Facebook "atta boys" they would be getting. IMO, go help people all you want, just keep it to yourself.

The reason someone helps doesn't matter. If that's the only reason, I don't care, I just want them to help.
And the OP's family sent out an email only to the family, so they weren't posting flyers and alerting all their social media friends.

The OP did that, then called them selfish for it.
