Also, are they are rich as they want you to think they are? From what you said about them (he being a president at a few companies, she sold a business) they are suppose to be "rich", but they could have made some bad investments, lived beyond their means, etc so now they have to pretend to be rich.

They obviously feel like they don't need anything that their family can/will buy them.
That their tastes are above what others will be willing to spend on them. So instead of gifts they don't want, and having to shop for people that they feel aren't on their level, they just do this charity thing instead of just saying "let's not do gifts".
They probably also feel like it makes them look good and maybe even feel good. Plus the tax deductions and not having to bother with shopping.
Basically they feel like they are superior to the people they feel required to "buy gifts" for.
They should say:
Instead of buying gifts for us, because we have been so blessed, pls donate to these charities.
Then if they don't want to fool with shopping for their family they could give them cash and let the recipients decide what they want to do with the cash.
But they don't want to seem lazy and or whatever or risk insulting someone's pride by giving cash to their family.
Plus that tax deduction...

They're not that type. They're sensibly frugal, like buying year-old Audis. But they are usually generous with family. Whenever they come to town dinner is always on them. They treat my Mom well and that's enough for me. I guess. I don't know. I'm just a little put off by this, though.
As someone said upthread, perhaps it isn't selfish. Maybe thoughtless is a better word. To me it is definitely lazy, although neither are lazy people at all.
And to answer another question upthread, yes, I did get them presents.

My wife did this for her nieces this year. Her main reason was she felt that past gifts were never appreciated.

We did this instead of having an office Christmas party. We usually take the whole office (12-14 ppl) to a nice restaurant and have dinner and drinks. We donated $3K to St. Jude's instead this year.
The only person that complained is the same guy that gets absolutely wasted every year at the party.

Every year when I'm asked what I want for Christmas I respond that I'd rather they give the gift/money to someone who needs it. Barely anyone ever takes me up on it. I don't need anything and really don't want anything. I'm anything but rich, but we're a DINK household and I can afford to buy stuff if I want it.

I think it's great! St. Jude's does incredible things for children that have cancer.

This is how i felt during the floods. People were posting selfies and pics of what they were doing. Most of them were doing it for the Facebook "atta boys" they would be getting. IMO, go help people all you want, just keep it to yourself.

I know of two families who converted to Jehovah's Witness just to keep from buying shite at Christmas and Birthdays.
