I just got a Christmas card from my brother and his wife. They may not be O-T rich but they are quite well off. (He has been the president of three well-known companies. She sold her business for millions.)

In the card was this letter:

"Hi Family:

In the last few years, our Christmas giving practice has been to donate what we might have spent on family to various charitable causes in thanksgiving for all the blessings we enjoy indidually and as a family. I hope you are as pleased and happy with that concept as I have been. It just feels good to give back.

In 2016, ____ and I will be donating, on behalf of the _____ family, what we hope will be percieved as a generous gift to:

St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital
Summit Center

Episcopal Relief and Development
Coachella Valley Rescue Mission

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL WITH LOVE AND PRIDE!!!!"

I think it's selfish and lazy.

What does the O-T think?

Sounds like they get to forego Christmas shopping for tax breaks.

I donate my relatives gifts to "The Human Fund" every year.

That is exactly what I do for my customers at work. For over 10 years, there have been nothing but overwhelming positive responses.

But it isn't the route I would go for family.

I commend your efforts, and you seem sincere.

However, with that said, it does remind me of when George Costanza donated in everyone's name to the Human Fund -- Money for People.

That's just my sick sense of humor, though.

sounds like some lazy frickers to me...do that and you don't have to think about what anybody wants or do any shopping for it. just send in your single tax deductible check.

Sounds pretty boastful tbh.

Why not just quietly donate to those charities and buy small inexpensive gifts for family?

And I feel sorry for any small kids that got shafted cause Aunt and Uncle Rich Assholes decided to forgo their gifts to brag about giving to charity instead.

Selfish? No.

Lazy? Maybe.

I would personally rather someone donate instead of give me a gift. But I can see where it comes off lazy. Unless they are donating to my favorite charities...

I've walked the halls of many different pediatric oncology units as a peds nurse. I get what you are saying.

But a 6 year old should still be given gifts from family members. Don't make a young child feel bad for wanting to be a kid and wanting toys.

Get them involved though. They don't understand giving money to charity. Instead...have them doing something physical to help others. Have them help hand out toys to kids at children's hospitals, etc.

agreed. It's like they're saying look at us we are donating to charity aren't we awesome? only insecure people brag about giving. You're supposed to do It because you feel like it's the right thing to do not to show off

I think that if someone wants $$ to be donated on their behalf instead of receiving gifts, that's fine. But they shouldn't assume that other people want donations made in lieu of receiving gifts.

Obviously they are wealthy and don't feel like they need anything, but that doesn't mean they should assume the people are buying for feel that way.

bingo

They can give to charity all year long

Using charity as a way to dodge the thought and effort of presents is very weak but brilliant because you really can't bitch about giving to charity.

On one hand, for me personally, I wouldn't care at all. In fact, when it comes to Christmas gifts, I'd rather people take whatever they would spend on me and put it towards gifts for kids. There is nothing they could give me that I "need", but for some reason I don't like how they come off as if they made a decision for everyone.

Do you buy gifts for them? I'd sort of look down on them if so. Its great to donate, but sometimes there is more to a gift than the actual material item. And like someone said.. They are giving you a "gift" that comes with a tax break.. I would call them out on that part.. If you do buy gifts for them, when you give it to them I would say something like "I like that idea of donating the money, yall would spend on gifts for everyone, to charity. Its a win-win situation, a charity gets a little extra money, yall don't have to think about what to buy everyone and it comes with a tax break.. Merry Christmas bro."
