More accurately it is the rural man's WalMart. Price per unit are not better at a DG. Outside of a DG store brand (Clover Valley?) food item you prefer to Walmart's Great Value brand there is little reason to choose DG over WM. They just tend to be more convenient since they are generally a quicker in and out and they are freaking everywhere.

There's a Dollar General right past the Pettus bridge in Selma that has a roll down steel gate for the front door when they close and they have a security guard walking around during the day.

Because everything is you know, a Dollar. It's amazing some of the shite you can get there for a Dollar. One of America's best kept secrets.
The others are mini-Walmarts that get a few bonus feel good points for serving poe folk in podunk food deserts.

The Dollar General in my town is a nightmare.
Nasty, aisles always cluttered, parking lot WAY too small, trash everywhere.
We have a General Dollar that is much better.

There is a DG literally right at the end of my road. It's always clean, well-stocked, busy, and the manager is library-sexy hot. She'd definitely get it.

Pretty much the only store open in the town my mom lived in.
Really handy place to stop and pick up items, easy to find, inexpensive.
