Six months ago a Dollar General opened up next door to a Fred's Pharmacy about 10 miles from my place. Fred's shut their doors last month. I feel for the pharmacy customers who now have to turn to the nearest CVS or Walmart.

DG has nothing to do with this.

And you'd be wrong. A dollar store can undercut 30% of the profits of a nearby local grocery store. Since it's not uncommon for several dollar stores to open in very close proximity of one another they frequently drive out other retailers.

As do most Americans. Poor people don’t have a monopoly on bad eating habits. Your own President lives on fast food.

When I was a kid some 35 years our neighbor started working at DG. She worked her way up all the way to District Manager buying stock and growing with the company and shes still with them in some leadership/manager trainer role. I wouldn't be surprised if shes a millionaire today.

The company estimates that three-quarters of the population lives within five miles of one of its stores,

If that is true, then I think you could deduce that 3/4 of the population also lives within 5 miles of a trailer park.

I have an e-toy shop. A few years ago there were a line of Dollar General exclusive G.I. Joe action figures. They were $6 each. I was selling them in my e-shop for $24-$42 dollars a piece. I was hitting all the Dollar Generals around BR and buying all they had. I got chummy with one manager who ordered a few dozen cases for me. Dollar General paid for a nice family vacation that year.

There's just the start of proving my deduction correct.

Is she’s been buying stock for 35 years she’s done very well for herself especially if at some point in the beginning they might have matched her. The stock is up over 35% this year alone.

I’ve owned Dollar General stock since 2015. It’s a very well run company.

Just started a position in DG. It's expensive, but I'll average down. Love the business model and obviously it's recession resistant.

I saw a documentary piece by the Leftist media outfit VICE that profiled these Dollar stores putting other stores including grocery stores out of business in rural, poor areas. There access to quality meats and refrigerated foods was being curtailed or eliminated.

Remember when Walmart was the big, bad boogieman? Well watch this, says Dolla General.

I live in a small town, around 20k. We have 5 DGs in town, another one 5 miles to the south, another one about 7 miles south of that and another one about 5 miles to the west of that. Only 1 of those existed over 5 years ago.

The quality of a DG store is directly related to the competence of the store manager / district manager.

A good store manager will run a clean, nice store that is well stocked with decent employees.

A poor store manager will have a dirty mess of a store, often out of stuff, with not enough staffing, and the employees they have will suck.

Fred's might have survived if it stayed in the dollar general model. It moved into pharmacy, didn't have the capacity to compete with Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, etc on cost. And it didn't have the customer service cashet to compete with your local independent pharmacies.
