Not saying that you went cheap, but my in laws went cheap for no real reason on two goldens and both dogs now have seizure and hip problems.
Sometimes it’s worth paying for more of an established line from a reputable breeder to avoid high costs later in the dogs life.

Got a border collie from the local SPCA for like $50–spayed, chipped, and vaccinated, holmes.

Got our last dog 4 years ago off FB. Some rednecks out in Centerpoint sold her for $90. Best $90 I've ever spent.

Add in paying for heartworm treatments, trazadone for anxiety, speciality diet to fix their almost certain skin issues, and you’re almost there.
I've gotten 2 dogs from shelters and never had to pay for any of that stuff. Paid $120 for each of them. Also got a free vet exam, coupons for food, etc.
And the shelter I got them from currently has 12 dogs on the website and maybe 1 of them could be considered a pit.

Let me provide you with some good information on this front. If you know what type of breed you prefer, do a google for the dog breed name and rescue. You will find many out there throughout the U.S. I currently have 2 Cane Corsos that I got this way from Cane Corso Rescue based out of Austin. I was living in Lafayette when I got the 1st one that was in Baton Rouge and in Vermont when I got the 2nd one from Massachusetts. Both were $500 to cover their investment in care, vaccines, etc. The kicker is, most of them have no actual shelter location. They are typically a national 501c3 non profit, but they have the dogs photos and background online and travel networks for moving dogs around the country. Unless you get lucky to find one located near you, you probably will not be able to meet the dog in advance unless you are willing to travel, but they will make the arrangements for transporting the dog to you. Any reputable rescue will have done a thorough assessment to determine their personality, temperament, strengths and weaknesses before they offer them for adoption. The initial screening process took awhile and they were very thorough, but that is just to be sure they are making a good match. They will always come spayed or neutered from a rescue, so if you hope to breed then have to buy from a breeder, but if not this is the way to go. Good luck!

Start at a website with certified kennel breeds such as the AKC or the CKC.
You know any breed you are looking for specifically?

We adopted a 3 yr old terrier for $187 last fall from a rescue shelter. He has been one of the best dogs I’ve ever had. Don’t be afraid to adopt.

Got a steal on mine for $2500. 11month old black lab from champion bloodline already trained for the field. Worth every bit of 5k

there are millions of dogs begging to go home with you from a shelter.
Never mind they may have bad temperaments or you have certain allergy needs, or god forbid actually want a specific dog. Quit thinking about you and start thinking about other dogs.
Or better yet, buy them from Chinese restaurants. Their dogs tend to be more more submissive and well fed.

Shelter dogs are the only ones I get. They need a home, I need a dog, and mutts are generally healthier than pure breeds. I have had about 12 different dogs over my life, and none of my shelter dogs have been a problem.

Consider rescuing a pound dog.
This is what we did and I think it cost around $160 but that included getting her spayed. That's been 8 years ago so it may be a little more now.

Where'd you get yours from? Might have gotten from the same breeder

The one I got in February 2020 cost $120. They spayed, microchiped, vaccinated, etc.

As an adult I have had 3 dogs. Shetland Sheepdog, Black Lab and a Hound mix. Didn’t pay a dime for any of them. 2 rescues and a pound dog. All 3 had quirks but they were all loving pets.
