Looking and it’s gotten pretty crazy.

My dad got his current dogs with one being $600 and one being free like 10 years ago which seems fair.

I was looking last night and most dogs were around $2500. I didn’t really even see anything cheaper than $1200.

And just because you pay a lot for your dog does t mean it’s necessarily healthy. My sister’s dog had to get $5000 of surgery within a year of her getting him (luckily the breeder had to pay per contract)

And most of the shelters I looked at are pretty empty right now (which is a good thing).

There’s nothing wrong with any of this and the price increase shows that puppy mills are being cleaned hot etc which is great.

I was thinking about getting a dog when I move though and now, almost certainly won’t.

Yep, bought a havanese a couple of months ago. $3,000. Cute dog though.

Doesn't the local shelter charge less than $100 to adopt? I got my dog from a rescue for $200.

Prices will stay high as long as people are hoarding dogs.

Why are you buying from a puppy mill when there are millions of dogs begging to go home with you from a shelter.

Never mind they may have bad temperaments or you have certain allergy needs, or god forbid actually want a specific dog. Quit thinking about you and start thinking about other dogs.

Consider rescuing a pound dog.

Get a free pit bull, OT posters with neck tats promise they will never hurt a fly except for strangers and unsupervised children.

Last time I went to mine, they had about 150 pits or "pit mixes" and nothing else.

ETA, Depending on where you live, you might have better luck than I did where I do.

The local shelter is adopting out all their black dogs for $20.

They don’t do home checks or require your signature in blood either.

staying at home during covid blew demand through the roof, a lot of breeders aren't even taking future litter reservations because they are all claimed

I know, below I posted I realize that to a fair extent with cleaning up the industry. But damn, it’s sad. I am not bad off but I don’t see any way I could justify getting a $2000 dog.

Some breeders are extremely proud of their litters. Looking for a hypoallergenic dog in the Louisiana area showed prices ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. That’s nuts.

Usually $150 and most throw in the neuter/spay and first vet visit as a part of the deal.

I love pound puppies. I adopted one in July and couldn't be happier. Dude is a beast and was keeping up with the well heeled cockers and drathars on our annual upland hunt.

Plus, I think there is a metaphysical thing going with pound puppies. They know you saved their arse so they tend to be a lot more patient and eager to please. Though, to be fair, ymmv.

What? I never said I was going to a puppy mill. Licensed breeders =\= puppy mills. I specifically said I looked at shelters and the only dogs in the shelters were I would move are pit bulls and I’m sorry, I’m not going to get a pit bull. I’m not an experienced enough dog owner for that.

Everything is getting more expensive. Wages remain the same.

If you’re buying pure bred dogs, yes they will be expensive. Get a rescue, they’ll love you more and cost way less
