Hit submit too early.

The guy who mows my yard used weed killer along my fence, around my trees and in one area that use to be a flower bed, that has a lot of trash grass that grows in it that needs to be weedeated (the weed eater thread made me think of this).

When he asked if it was okay if he did it, I asked if it was safe for dogs and he said yes.. But then I thought about it and should have asked him what kind he used so I could make sure myself. Anyone with dogs, that go in the backyard often, uses weed killer in the backyard?

Uh yeah.

Around the edges of house foundation. Along fences.

Yes, although I have seen some houses where they sprayed up against the slab so often that the lack of grass holding the dirt around the slab was starting to cause wash out under the slab.

Yes. But more to kill neighborhood dogs than weeds.

I use it sparingly.
I'm not a big fertilizer guy anyway. I figure it is not helping the environment in the long run. Just look at the dead zone in the GOM near the Mississipp River.

If it's a spray they should have msds that says how long to wait until you let the dogs out.

The granules probably have the same thing.

I have 2 dogs and have only waited until the spray stuff dried, like 30 minutes or an hour.

The vast majority of herbacides labeled for residential use are harmless to animals when used as directed.

Pesticides are where you need to be careful.

I use Roundup and it says safe for domestic animals once dry. I usually keep the dogs away for 4-5 hours just to be safe. Never had any issues.

If you're really worried use Burnout. It's a 15% vinegar solution (as opposed to the 3% in your kitchen cabinet). Also has highly concentrated citric acid. So it's fully biodegradable.

Nonselective so you don't want to use it near any good plants, but it'll wash away next time it rains. You just have to use it 24 hours before the next storm or hose it away after 24 hours, and keep the dogs away until it's watered down to a harmless level.

Thanks, it was sprayed on Wednesday, since then it has rained, but my dogs were chewing on the grass in the area where it was sprayed. I figured it wouldn't hurt them, but I really wasn't sure.

Round up is no more dangerous than vinegar. I wouldn't pour it in your dogs water bowl, but as far as everything meant for residential use as said above it's almost all perfectly safe to use around kids and animals. Most of them say to wait until 'dry' just for their own liability.

Weeds are considered pests. Herbicides are considered pesticides. The label is the law. Read it and abide by it.
