Dog just got skunked.

Don’t have special skunk shampoo. Smells terrible. She got it right in the face letting her out before we went to bed.
Anybody had to deal with this before? Internet says peroxide baking soda and dish soap is a remedy but that it isn’t safe for eyes and face.

Giving the dog a bath in tomato juice can help with the odor.

Try dousing a skunked dog with about a cup of vanilla extract mixed in a gallon of water to get rid of skunk odor, says Hazel Christiansen, a longtime professional groomer and former president of the American Grooming Shop Association, in Lewiston, Idaho. Let the dog soak in the solution for about 10 minutes before applying dog shampoo and rinsing.
For the vinegar remedy, mix 2 parts water with 1 part apple cider vinegar, and set the solution aside (the total amount you’ll need to mix depends on the size of your dog). Thoroughly wet your smelly dog’s coat with water. Now, work the vinegar solution through the fur. Let the solution sit for about 5 minutes; then rinse thoroughly. Work carefully and be sure the solution doesn’t drip into your dog’s eyes (it would sting).
If neither of the concoctions above seems to work, here’s one last skunk-odor removing remedy that’s been passed on from one generation of dog lovers to the next. Mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon dish-washing liquid. Apply this mixture in the same way you would the vinegar solution. The quantities listed should make enough deskunking solution for a medium-size dog (30 to 50 pounds), so use less or more as needed for the size of your dog.

I'll vouch for the ACV method. Used that same exact article I pasted above. It seems like it would be far less messy than tomato juice and it worked very well (I didn't have tomato juice when the late, great SirWinston got skunked and used the ACV one.

I have been sprayed by a skunk myself and I couldn’t find anything that cut that smell. That has been 40 - 50 years ago and it still makes me sick to think about it. Just a sickening smell…

Good luck
Our golden took a skunk spray right to the face at 2 am. Guess he heard it outside and ran outside to chase it. Next thing the dog door exploded as he ran back in into our room shaking it everywhere. Nothing worked that great. I stayed home the next day cleaning up and ended up giving him 5 or so bathes. Used vinegar. Baking soda. Dish soap was maybe the best. So many bathes. Could still smell it slightly weeks later.b

When my wife and I were just married and first time homeowners, our cat once got skunked. We didn’t realize it and became convinced there was faulty wiring in the house causing the smell. It seemed to move from room to room and smelled like burned rubber. We were at our wits end and really close to calling an electrician when I laid next to the cat on the living room floor and made the connection. We still laugh about this, today.

Yea and it frickin sucks. That mix works best if you don’t have the skunk shampoo and make sure to wash yourself if it got on you at all. It’ll soak into your skin and you’ll smell like skunk for a week if not. If the smell got into your house it’s gonna be there awhile- bowls of vinegar will soak it up over time.

Yeah it’s all over the 2nd floor of our house even though she has stayed in the basement.
I think the peroxide mixture has knocked a lot of the smell off of her. Throwing all the towels outside. This is awful.

The mixture should be reapplied several times. Without getting to much into the chemistry, the mixture doesn't mask the smell, it changes the structure of the mercaptins (stink compounds) so that they can be encapsulated by the soap and washed away. However, striped skunks have 2 additional compounds within their spray that are not activated until they interact with water.
So if you wash with the mixture once or twice and then wash it off with water, you have now reactivated the smell.

Got a German Shepard that is attracted to skunks like a magnet. This recipe works.
Fill a quart deli container half full of baking soda, add 1/4 cup dish soap and just enough water to form a paste. Rub on dog, wait as long as the dog will stand it, then rinse. Repeat as needed.

Had my dog get hit twice in 1 week. Without a fail, this recipe has worked. 1 bottle of peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and a tbs of dawn dish detergent. Scrub into dog with mixture all over. Wash off with water. Skunk scent was gone. I keep all three items and a bucket on hand at all times

You'll have to take it out back and shoot it

I was skunked walking home from Tigerland one night heading down Nicholson. There was a paved sidewalk at the time, not sure if still there. (late 1980's). Bastard must've been in the tall weeds alongside the path.

Don’t know what value skunks, raccoons, gnats or mosquitoes add to the food chain or ecosystem, but I’d love to see all of them go extinct and see if we can survive.

You may find a way to get the smell down, but…
That shite is in the dog’s skin for a while. Whenever he gets wet that smell will come back a little.
Nothing can fix that except time.

This might be a long shot and dumb BUT...you could try POOPH pet odor spray product it claims to remove skunk odors.
You see it on infomercials it might be FOS but all of you have nothing to lose.
