Does the term “coonass” refer to only people of south Louisiana or Louisiana in general?

I don't think there is a rule anymore. My bias is it refers to people who reside south of US 190.

Technically yes, but it has morphed into most people from Louisiana since ppl in other areas of the country have caught onto it and call all of us coonasses.

I was born and raised in the Atchafalaya basin for 3 decades, but my dad is from west Texas and my mom is from Alabama. I’m not coonass. That term is for true Cajuns

Avoyelles Parish breeds some of the coonassiest coonasses you’ll ever see and it’s almost Alexandria.

Anywhere past there and GTFO, though.

In 2002 I was on a HS trip in Europe and I referred to South LA people as coonass, they thought I was talking about Blacks and being racist...my group was from non south besides our 8 college kids

A probable, but still a debatable point. However, they definitely are not coonasses
