For the past couple of weeks, I've been playing Mafia 3 which takes place in New Bordeaux (New Orleans) in 1968 and it got me to thinking about the real mob and what happened to it's influence. At one time the mafia's influence was huge, it spread through just about every fiber of society. Today, you don't hear a peep from the mob in the media, it is like they don't even exist anymore, but I know they do.

Your thoughts?

Pretty sure one of my newest clients is in the mafia. He runs a family owned trucking company

US Attorneys have used RICO law for a long time now to hit the Sicilian La Cosa Nostra very hard. So hard, in fact, that other organized criminal syndicates have probably surpassed La Cosa Nostra.

La Cosa Nostra is the correct name. Mafia is not the correct name.

I've read that they still are involved in meat and produce, etc distribution in the north east.

Yes it still exists. The mob has been a very interesting subject to me. Every once in a while I’ll google mob arrests in NYC and find mobsters still getting arrested monthly. Some guy was arrested last year in Genovese for murder, it was supposed to be his initiation.

The mafia was much more revered than criminal syndicates we have today. I envy that about them.

The unions and the river boat pilots here might as well be thought of as mafia.

Yeah. Groups like the New York 5 Families still exists. They mostly operate in the north east though, but they’re definitely a shell of what they once were.

They're still influential in certain industries in the NE and Midwest.
