I have a love-hate relationship with my current state: California. On one hand I hate the politics, taxes, and overcrowding. On the other hand I love the job opportunities in tech, the great weather, and the absolutely amazing outdoor scenery.

My favorite activities are backpacking, camping, and overland 4-wheeling. I’ve considered Idaho, but there just isn’t much in the way of job opportunities for a techy like myself. Texas has a ton of those types of jobs, but I’m a little worried that it seems to be primarily flat and dry. Are there any areas there with mountains, woods, snowboarding, that sort of stuff?

Colorado has more than enough Californians that have ruined the state. Stay in Cali and don’t leave.

Nah, I’ll go where I please. Not that I want to, Colorado is basically just California with more mountains but no beaches.

Yeah, just not quite the same as California. Much of it is dry and rocky dessert type geography with some springs and ephemeral rivers. Big Bend, Ft Davis area, Guadalupe Mountains out by El Paso, some canyon up in the panhandle, some hills here and there to the north and west of Austin and San Antonio.

Every state does, but Texas is way down the list of we’re talking quantity and diversity of beautiful scenery

If natural beauty is your thing then don’t move to Texas except maybe the Austin-San Antonio corridor.

Unless you have some magical job that makes you work in the trans-pecos, you won’t live in the parts of Texas that are beautiful.
