Does LA Dept of Revenue use Credit Collector for unpaid taxes?

I’ve tried to get them on the phone and I keep getting a call from folks in Virginia over a $1,500 bill from 2014 income taxes. Have never received anything in mail.
I don’t believe a state would do this but this is Louisiana.
Likelihood this is legit?

A lot is states are doing this - so is the IRS. It’s an obvious money grab by the debt collection firms. I have no idea how they are more effective or efficient than than the state agencies who can just levy your accounts and garnish your wages. It also opens up a lot of chances for fraud.

They do outsource some debt to collection agencies but only selected accounts for a short period of time.
I’d say to call LDR and ask for the balance on your account whenever the system comes back up. If they say there is a balance, ask if it has been outsourced to a collection agency and get their info.

It’s a scam. The IRS or state department won’t use a 3rd party for that kind of thing. And the send letters or agents, not phone calls.

Give them a big GFY.
Or if you feel like being nicer about it, tell them you're not sending a penny to an entity you just heard from for the first time with no proof of identity or claim to the funds they're demanding.
If you owe any money, it's owed to the state. You don't know who's on the other end of the phone, but it's not the LA DOR.

Reality is, IRS and a number of states, including LDR, ARE using private collection agencies.
It's a giant mess, because there is so much fraud out there. Every CPA and advocacy group has begged the IRS and the states to stop using them because of the confusion issue, but they still do.
I wouldn't pay the collection agent a dime. You always have the right to directly deal with the taxing authority. I would call LDR and check with them.

Are they asking for a check or for Google Play gift cards?

Well if it’s LA your license is probably suspended so you can check that first to somewhat verify if you actually have a debt.

LA DOR is so incredibly incompetent. Im pretty young and just started making more money recently but a few years ago while in school they actually owed me a refund. I think I ended up getting it in 2017 when it was 2014's filing. It was only $125 or so which is why I never really noticed or went after it hard until I was looking over my previous filings to do my taxes that year.
