I started this thread in a hurry, but since people complained about my title and my original post, I am editing.

Last week, I watched "Manhunt Unabomber" series on Netflix and I enjoyed it. He was caught in 1996, I was in high school at the time, but for some reason I don't remember it being a huge story to the point where everyone was talking about it. It was in the news and all, but I just remember a guy was sending bombs in the mail and they eventually arrested him.

Watching the series, I learned a few things I didn't realize.. One being the fact that he stopped for a period of time (I think 7 years) then suddenly started sending them again.

He wrote, what they referred to as his medifest, titled "Industrial Society and its Future". While I do not agree with his actions at all, there were some things he wrote in this essay, that made sense.

Its kind of fascinating because the "Industrial Society and it's future", which he wrote, had some truths to it..

I think he caught national attention following the 96 bombing at the Olympics.

I member, the news showing the blowed up mailboxes and the then credible FBI all over small offices that were targets.

That was the thing that really stymied the investigators I imagine. He went after small targets and not the big indy giants. If I remember correctly, only 1 target was even in a multi business/occupant building. All the rest were single residences and stand alone businesses.

He had national headlines well before '96

I certainly remember him but not the hysteria surrounding the threats to bomb another airliner in 1995

I remember seeing the sketch on tabloids in early 90s. Always thought it looked like Weird Al in a hoodie and sunglasses as a kid.

there were big featurettes done on network news shows like 20/20...it was a big story, but he time in between attacks and no leads...it would disappear for big chunks of time

I know because I was obsessed with the case after watching that 20/20 special. I was a weird kid. that Barbara walters knew how to tell an interesting story. they never would have caught him if his brother hadn't found the manifesto cleaning out his shite.

they had absolutely no fricking clue who he was, and by that I mean, just what type of guy they were looking for. the FBI was pretty honest about it after the fact...they had nothing on him.

Have y'all ever read about the psych experiment Kaczynski was in when he was at Harvard? He was only 17 at the time and apparently the professor (Henry A. Murray) singled him out for abuse. I heard an interesting podcast about it a while ago and it sounded like the experiment had a very lasting effect on Kaczynski. Not saying this "caused" him to become the Unabomber but it may have helped.

The reason he was named the "Unabomber" was because his targets were mostly Universities (Un) and airlines (A)... I want to say the last bomb he sent was to some government agency..

The guy was such a recluse even if they had a really good profile capable of generating leads...he lived in the middle of fricking nowhere. Nobody knew him. Moreover, his appearance definitely belied his intelligence and capability.

He was careful too. They were never on his trail. Had his brother not found the manifesto, without more bombs going off they’d never would have caught him

I first heard of him in the early 90s (93 I think)

For a long period of inactivity and the media landscape of the day, he was a big news item in that everyone knew of him and had probably seen that rendering

His arrest was huge news but I think a lot of young people didn’t know who he was when he was arrested. Probably the first time a lot of people (kids/teenagers) ever heard of him

It was an almost 20 year investigation and he had been inactive for a while I believe
