re: Does anyone else not give a shite about their career?

I’m early 40’s and feel the exact same way. I consider working to be a means to an end. I work for money so I can live the lifestyle I want. I have never found some kind of inherent joy in work itself - probably because no job that is truly enjoyable actually pays anything. When I was fresh out of college, I wanted to climb the ladder quickly. I quickly discovered that I wasn’t willing to work the 60-80 hours a week for 30 years needed to get a “chance” at the CEO spot. Just wasn’t worth it.
If money was not a concern, I’d be done with “work” forever and go sit on a beach for the rest of my life.

Yup. I haven’t done it but it’s pretty normal. We also do 3 engine ferries pretty regularly.
Well maybe not regularly. But I hear it happens 3-4 times a year.

My current career goal is retirement.

that’s pretty cool, back the day we used to do powerbacks to get off the gate, sounds like some cool shite that you’ll be doing

I wish I could go back and start something like Door dash. That shite was my idea 15 years ago. Shame on me.

If you mean for healthcare I think the beginning was Obamacare. Covid was dropping a nuke onto an already burning fire. But in general, agree, no denying it.

Solid burn old man. I appreciate that you capitalized “His” thereby indicating He is God, thereby making me Christ. You’re not completely accurate, but I am close.

I don't give a shite about mine. My mindset towards work is I'm here to collect a paycheck. This paycheck allows me to not only have a home, but to do fun shite. I give a shite about doing fun shite. Work is just a means to that end.
If I was to win the lottery and become super rich, I'm quitting and never working another day in my life. Some would call me lazy, but I don't really care.

I'm bumping 50 and squarely there. I've been through a half dozen different careers, from truck driver, to technical writer, to lawyer, to computer admin, to college professor, to telcom tech. Actually moved up into management for a couple years recently only to get busted back down to technician during a staffing cut.
I want more money, but I'm not sure the headaches of management are worth it. Have job security, seniority, and know how to do the work. At this point, a day at work is just an excuse to turn on some tunes and let my mind wander--just going through the motions. There's something relaxing about doing manual labor and even getting paid decently to do it.

I don’t give a shite about the career but I give a shite about the goal- retiring at a young age and then enjoying the most comfortable life hardly anyone in existence has ever enjoyed (when you look at the history of human civilization). Don’t go into debt, find a partner who is an earner with similar goals, and max out investing early.

I just do my job and try and get along with errybody. No ambition or desire to move up or own my own shite.

Yea I’m 25 and you’re overthinking this bro
Posted on 5/25/23 at 1:53 am to Tommy Noble
You are not to old to pursue something that you want to do ,but you have to be willing to get out of your comfort zone. If you can't or you are not willing to do that than you will stay coasting. So if you can honestly look at yourself in the mirror and say I am willing and able to get out of my comfort zone than the next questions are what do I want to do? Can I realistically do it? What steps do I need to take to achieve this? Then map it out.

I'm a few years ahead of you. One thing that adds to the disillusionment is that there are so many new and different, and probably easier and better ways to make money now. My ancient white collar profession is a freaking grind and I have to deal with too many imbeciles and hostile actors. I could probably find a way to make money for myself on my phone. I just want to make money and don't care about careerism anymore.
