Can we get an update from the OP? Baton Rouge is far shittier now than late 2018

Other than marrying my wife, leaving BR was the best decision I have ever made.

I used to love it but that was also in my 20s. Lots of younger women around that are somewhat educated and havent pushed out 4 kids.

I enjoyed it when I was there. But then I got out!

Oh no. The class infatuation in the South is on steroids, particularly considering most people are a generation or three removed from poverty.
Its probably similar in other places on the East Coast where people have had generational wealth for centuries. But the South? Its just weird.

Used to be for Shreveport as well, but most of those folks are gone.

The last few people I’ve met that are from Shreveport are kind of proud to be trashy - is that kind of the same thing?

Can we get a list of pros and cons in your eyes?

BR isn't great by any means (I've since lived in three different cities that blow it out of the water), but I'd much rather live there than the small town I grew up in.
Small town life has its perks, but I'd much rather live in or at least close to a decently sized city where I'm close to a variety of stores, restaurants, services, and activities.
I do look back fondly on my time in Baton Rouge, though I don't think I would ever move back.

I’ve never been anywhere other than Louisiana so I guess I just didn’t know

I actually really liked living in BR. I worked like 15 minutes away from home. My house had a big shady backyard for my dog and a great covered patio for hanging out with friends. I lived in walking distance of a library in a very safe neighborhood. I had plenty of friends and family nearby who frequently visited. I had enough entertainment to keep me reasonably satisfied from the bar and live music scene. Never had trouble getting to or from campus on Gameday and never paid to park. Food scene was good enough to keep me full and happy with a decent list of places to try. Never had drama with my HOA or anything like that.
I was insulated from the crime and traffic to a degree, didn’t have school aged kids to worry about, and had deep ties to the community. I can understand why it was good for me, but wouldn’t be for most other people.
BR isn’t great, and it doesn’t seem to be heading in the right direction, but I feel like it often gets more than its fair share of criticism on this site, too. Familiarity breeds contempt. This board gives so many cities a pass that suffer from similarly bad issues of traffic, bad public schools, crime, and crappy weather. We think BR is exceptionally bad because it’s small yet has those things, but it’s not that small anymore and hasn’t been for a long time. BR is up to 800k in its metro area, and that brings a lot of big city problems that are exacerbated by the corrupt small town mindset and identity of a lot of the political class of BR.
BR could be so much better, and it could be a lot worse.

Yes Baton Rouge sucks the chrome off of a car bumper.

Very true. Lots of potential here.

Sadly, we seem to be slipping in that direction at warp speed.
I've lived in BR for 55 years, and never until the last few months have I ever considered moving. Between traffic and the glacial pace of road improvements, poor planning overall, increased crime rates and our excuse for a mayor, I'm ready to bug out.

St Francisville seems nice

I still love it here except when I get my privilege checked - which seems to be happening at a more alarming rate than ever.

Which city is worse...San Francisco or Baton Rouge?
Which state is worse...LA or CA?

Same here…49 years. My wife and I have had enough too. We won’t start the process until next year, but we are definitely done with BR and LA. We don’t want to be the last ones left to turn out the lights. Fairly certain we will end up in the Naples Florida area. It’s amazing to compare their mayor, city council, DA, and police chief to their counterparts here in BR.
