I think anonymity saves lives.
Even rational, sane speech that DARE to oppose the company line is met by some people with threats of violence.
Because there are unhinged loons out there who advocate beating kids who wear the wrong hat, I think we can safely say that certain segments of the population are willing to commit acts of violence against those who think differently than they do.
Thankfully, a degree of anonymity creates a buffer between people who want to hurt those who don't bow to their ideology and those who own guns and want to avoid making grease spots out of crusaders who are stupid enough to either show up on their doorstep or dox them.

I've become so argumentative messing around here and it doesn't help that me and the other guys in the office sit around sometimes and just argue with each other for entertainment. It's fun to us. We're a pretty tight knit group.
If I read or hear something, my first instinct is to argue against it. Even if I completely agree with their statement, I'll still find an argument against it.
It's more fun than everyone agreeing on everything.

For some that may be true, but we all know there are those who pretend to be a hell of a lot more than what they truly are just for the sake of making themselves look good.
How many men and women misrepresent themselves on these things, especially on those dating sites?
How many women have been assaulted or even killed due to meeting "Mr. Right" on-line and deciding to meet up with him?
There have been quite a few people killed answering adds for jobs, going to meet the potential employer and wind up dead out in the middle of nowhere. Or the people selling cars who meet with a potential buyer only to be robbed and/or killed for that car.

Anonymity is part of it, but it's also that we find it easier to be an arse to a computer screen than to a real human in front of you.
If people on the internet all wore masks and disguises and met up IRL, they'd still be a lot nicer to one another even though they're still anonymous

No, my true self is much less flippant and much more serious. I destress by letting lose a little bit more on the internet by my true personality is much more type A controlling. I feel best when I can be attacking a goal aggressively and feeling progress and I’m miserable if I can’t be (which is now).

I think the majority of it is trolling.
There are also people that take their e-cred far too seriously, and in an effort to fit in with some boards, they'll say a ton of shite they don't actually believe.

Sounds like you believe we pretend to be decent when "forced" to, but we are actually truly vile when allowed to be.
The second part should be representative of our true selves. How we act when we are allowed to be our honest selves.

Here's a question: In current year, is their any benefit in being nice or diplomatic?

I'm the same IRL. I also know that several people know who I am on TD. If someone's life sucks bad enough to make a fake internet personality, they should get out of the house and do something different.

No, not at all. I think we're naturally decent to other human beings when we see them in person, even if we know we'll never see them ever again and nobody will ever know what happened between you.
We are vile to our computer screens because we don't see the person on the other side as a person. We dehumanize them.
