Does anonymity on the internet allow us to be our true selves?

We all know social media such as Twitter, message boards, comments sections on Youtube, etc are filled with some of the most vile shite.

Does that mean that these people are being their true, unfiltered selves or is it more of an act of just venting frustrations or alleviating built up anger from stress or whatnot?

Not sure if trolling quite fits into what I'm talking about. That seems like assholes just entertaining themselves.

There's a saying that a person's true character comes out when that person thinks nobody's watching. Is this the case?

Maybe for some people. For others, it's the opposite. They build personas and characters, much like professional wrestling. For example, my SEC rant persona is nothing like the one I post with on the OT or other boards, and not my personality IRL. It's a fun hobby to kill time between flights and whatnot.

I've thought about this for a while. I think it would be a very good thesis.

Absolutely not.

Most of the people who hang out on the internet are losers, which is why they're on the internet.

Except for the OT, of course. It's populated by guys who only bang 10's.

I continue to wonder about this, as well, especially with regard to comment sections and Twitter like you mention.

Are there THAT MANY vile, ugly people? Because, if so, we as a society from my perspective are in a world of hurt. I see some of it here, too, but with downvotes of the more unpleasant stuff there is some measure of accountability.

It's almost like road rage. Most every day I'm fine with someone cutting me off, but every once if I'm in a bad mood it'll pisses me off bad.

Same case here. I'll post some hateful shite if I'm in a bad mood. I'm cool today though.

I’m basically the same online and irl. If anything, I might be a bit nicer online, as I’m more inclined to just say frick it and move on instead of arguing because it just doesn’t matter.

That is the reason this question popped in my head. Seems like A LOT of assholes out there that you don't run into in real life.

I do tend to think most people are truly more a-hole than nice. We pretend to be nice as a social construct.

On here yes. Most of these people wouldn't have the balls to say the stuff they say here to someone's face.

The one thing I have learned from things like comment sections, Twitter, etc is the gen pop is fricking retarded. I had hope for the future for a while; now, it's just a reminder that Idiocracy is becoming a documentary.
