Does an apology mean anything anymore?

In this day and age where everyone is offended so easily does an apology mean as much as it did before? You see it with public figures who do something that offends the masses and then they backtrack and apologize like it will make anything better. Damage is already done and the tiki torches are out, own your offenses

I'll only be satisfied when the person that bumped into me at the grocery store loses his job, his money, and any prospects for future employment.

depends. "I'm sorry" doesn't mean shite if you say it for the same thing over and over again. sometimes it's a you fricked up situation that i'm sorry won't fix

I'm sorry you feel this way.

The person being apologized to does not have to accept it.
At least that's what my wife tells me.
I've stopped apologizing.
I'm into week 3 of no sex with her.

only if it's given BEFORE getting caught.

The failure to do this portion is what renders most apologies as weak as tepid bathwater. They always seem to be underscored with a "but" or "because".
Say you were wrong, say you should not have done it, then stop.

I'm sorry and I apologize both have the similar meaning.....Unless you're at a funeral.

The problem is an apology for these viral “offenses”, sincere or not, only seem to inflame those who had no connection to it anyway.
So someone had an argument with some cashier somewhere and said mean things.
That guy could go back and apologize but once the lynch mob is out, any backing down is just blood in the water to the sharks.
The fact that your life and livelihood can be destroyed by people who never even met you and likely couldn’t identify you on the street is...bizarre.

It does.
It’s how you go about it though.

Isn't one of Gibbs rules "Never apologize, it's a sign of weakness". I am sorry if this post offends you.

House, spouse, kids, and even the dog/cat/goldfish must be lost too!

Told your wife sorry about the mess I left. She understood.

I don't know that this is universal, but the world is full of people who are only sorry that they got caught.

Depends on the person you are attempting to apologize to.
If it is something that you keep doing (without making a change), then it is just lip service. And eventually an apology, just like your word, won't mean anything.
But if you're sincere and do make changes and the person you are apologizing to doesn't accept it, there's nothing you can really do about it. The only two people that you can really get right with is yourself and the Lord. Anyone else accepting your apology is doing it on their own good.
That said, if you are sincere with your apology, make changes and the person you are apologizing to does not accept it, then that's on them. If they hang on to anger, hate or past negative experiences, it will eventually eat them up inside and not you.

It does, if it said with genuine remorse. Most are just said by someone believing that an apology gives them a mulligan.
