If someone is forced into making one or told to do so or else, then no...it means nothing. I've never understood why people demand an apology from someone who clearly has no interest in making one. Who does that serve? the person apologizing obviously does not mean it, and if they don't mean it what does the person being apologized to get out of it other than forcing a person to submit to doing something they didn't want to do?

An apology when offered freely without caveats certainly can mean something, but even then only if the person being apologized to is actually open to it and is not looking for the more than a heartfelt apology.

I think so, as long as the apology is sincere.

Wait for someone not to apologize for something they should...your level of frustration will let you know that, yes, apologies do still mean a lot.

If I apologize, I don't mean it.

In this day and age where everyone is offended so easily does an apology mean as much as it did before? You see it with public figures who do something that offends the masses and then they backtrack and apologize like it will make anything better. Damage is already done and the tiki torches are out, own your offenses

I'm sorry, would you repeat the question?

Personally, I save apologies for when they are truly needed, and I make an effort to be sincere.

FWIW, I do look down on people who are constantly apologizing for the smallest things, "Sorry I called you during lunch," "Sorry I forgot to copy you on that email," etc.

Apologies just appease people for a brief moment.

The fact is there's no such thing as forgiveness.

True forgiveness = forgetting that it happened. That's all it is.

A lot of factors go into it for me personally. How long did it take you to say it? How did you say it, and are you saying it so you feel better about yourself or are you saying it because you generally care about the person(s) you hurt?

Big question.

Today, if you are in an accepted minority group, that is perceived to be held down by whitey, then your apology holds the weight of the universe and should be accepted 100%.

If you are White, White-Asian, or White-Hispanic, then you are 99.999% pure and unadulterated evil, and your apology to anyone other than those within your evil cultural circle is 100% suspect at best.

On an interpersonal level, it wholly depends on the source, and how many times the apology has been rendered for the same action. For example: If your wife keep tripping and falling on cocks, then apologizes for it each time, then I have to assume the apology isn't genuine.

Depends on the apology.

An apology is what you offer someone when you do something, not for their response to your action. When someone says, "I'm sorry you're upset" I view that as meaningless. It's not an apology. It sounds like one, but all it proffers one is acknowledgement they are hurt, not that you are responsible or remorseful for it.

A true apology is, "I'm sorry I hurt you." No strings, no buts, just a simple, I'm sorry I hurt you.
