re: Does altitude somehow prevent obesity? The correlation with altitude is interesting.

The rate of obesity in most developed countries was steady at around 10% until 1980, when it suddenly began to rise.
That's when the shift to desk jobs was happening.

I just got back from a week in Paris and that was my observation as well, The total lack of fat people. It’s astonishing.
They don't put sugar in their bread and they don't put corn syrup in every God damn thing under the sun.
The drink coffee and wine.
They smoke cigarettes.
They eat unpasteurized cheese.
They walk a lot in the big cities.
And they live longer than us on average.
I was over there for a couple months and lost 10 lbs and I was eating dessert at every meal because I was being comped. I didn't drink any soda because it was cheaper to drink wine.

Lower population density. People that live in lower density areas tend to not eat shite tier food nearly as often as people who can Ubereats themselves a McDonald’s 20 piece any time they want.
But you're also talking about the poorest section of the nation and lack of money leads to poor eating habits, generally.

That seems like a pretty simple answer for the magic 1980 number. Ingredients in soft drinks, energy drinks, etc. began changing drastically and you have to be able to read labels and do basic math to avoid diabetes.
It's amazing when I'm in more rural areas of Texas, or off-brand convenience stores right here in Houston, it's hard to find anything to drinking besides "regular" soft drinks and energy drinks, and crap snacks.

More altitude, more hiking and mountain biking.
Doing things outside in Louisiana sucks unless it’s a boat or golf.

Probably has more to do with convenience. My office is about a mile from a crummy grocery store, and there are multiple gas stations and fast food restaurants in the area.
If I go to the crappy grocery store and buy vegetables, cheese, fruits, yogurt, etc I can buy enough lunch for a week for $20.
A fast food value meal costs more than that.

I was one of the fastest people in Denver... And now I'm one of the skinnier people in Charlotte.

Park outside a Walmart in Asheville and get back to me.

No you can't. A pack of yogurt that isn't junk Yoplait is a dollar each. Any decent cheese is five dollars for a small block. Apples or bananas are a buck each. The berry family runs 5 dollars or more a pint.

I think there's also a peer pressure involved if your friends/family/coworkers are all spending their weekends outside hiking/skiing/enjoying the outdoors then you're more likely to go do the same.
Whereas, if you're in south Louisiana, your friends/family/coworkers are more likely to be inside in the AC because of the terrible heat/humidity.

As opposed to living in south Louisiana, where it's very easy for anyone, fit or not, to stay indoors nine months a year because of the horrible heat.
It’s hot in South Florida just like Louisiana but they aren’t as obese.

Fat people can't breath in higher altitudes. You know, like 100ft.

I’m assuming reliance on manual labor and lack of fast food proximity have helped there.

Seeing a fat person here is almost as rare as seeing a black one.

More things to do outdoors in those areas. Also has a lot to do with Culture. You can buy a fifth of whiskey at 7am on Sunday Morning in Louisiana. Midwest mountain states have a lot of mormons that don’t drink.
Look at Appalachia, lots of hefty baws in Tennessee
