Doctor visit etiquette

When seeing a doctor for the first time, during introduction, do you greet the doctor with a handshake?
I went to a doctor today for the first time, and when he walked into the examination room, he said my name, I nodded, said his name, and stuck out my hand to shake. He looked at my hand, and seemed taken aback. We didn't shake and I felt uncomfortable/ embarrassed during the rest of the visit.
What say the sages of the OT?
He is an orthopedic doc.

Probably a good idea not to shake hands in a medical setting in general.

If you are sick with a fever probably best to avoid contact until he puts gloves on

Doctors are above you and don’t want to shake some middle of the road schmucks hand

Always go for the shake. The doctor's hand should be a little wet. Then you know he/she is washing their hands after each person they see.

I disrobe in the waiting room to save everyone a little time.
Be prepared!

Doctor has been banging your wife. He was to embarrassed to shake your hand because of it.

Must’ve checked out your shitty insurance coverage before he walked in

He sounds like an arse, especially if it's an ortho practice.

I shake my doctor's hand every time I go visit.

Sounds like a complete dick.

I usually start with the ole Ace Ventura talk with your butt introduction.

This in BR?
Very unusual for them to not shake your hand. I do it every time I see my GP, or an ortho for my broken body.
