I seriously think I'd rather go work at Home Depot than do that stuff

I'm an SAP solution architect full time for my company and do SAP consultancy as a side job.

Started 10 years ago when I started using SAP as a business user - warehouse supervisor. After a year or two I was extremely proficient and became our business superuser. Two years later our factory was shut down but I was asked to transition to our Business Transformation Team and work from home. Essentially an analyst acting as a liason between the business teams and IT. Project lead, requirements gathering, troubleshooting, process design, etc.

I did that for 4 years and then transitioned into my current technical role when IT absorbed our team. I manage IMG configuration, but technical specs for our developers, supply chain side project lead, etc.

Bro, do you even LISP? That was some of the useless crap LA Tech tried to teach me in CS. Ended up with an Ag degree from LSU just to get a B.S.

Started with trying to get games to run and dial into bulletin boards on a 1200? baud modem with MS-DOS 3.22. Certified in a bunch of things, including networking, security, privacy, IT audit, cloud, etc.

However, as I was working as the "Security Administrator" at an ASP in Bon Carre in my 20s, I realized the network engineer that was always on call that sat across from me was in his early 40s. It did not seem if I continued on the technical path that I would ever leave that life, so I went into consulting and am the guy that understands sticking a "permit any any" statement at the top of a firewall rule set means every other rule is going to get ignored.

Consulting or career death. If you see "Site reliability engineer" run very fast in the other direction if you have children you like to spend time with.

KPMG and/or TCS will be putting you out of a job soon. Not saying that to be a dick, just letting you know, as a friend.

Wrote my first program around 1978 (stored on punchcards!) Been working IT professionally since 1986, Unix/Linux Sys Admin since 94, 4-5 years as a Network Engineer (Cisco) around 2000, then back to Sys Admin. zero formal education (it didn't really exist), stacks of training and certs.

Retirement in < 5 years.

Those are exec level decisions, and those people roll in and out on the reg.

But TCS will still be hired... and people's jobs will still be offshored to an equally-credentialed expert in India, who will work for 10% of the pay.

There’s a name I haven’t heard in many years, good stuff.

I’m not in IT, worked the hardware side for real-time systems back when Edison & Tesla were duking it out over DC vs AC.

I wanted to run all of IT, I had no desire to get locked into one area. I get paid very well to build the roadmap/vision and coordinate, sometimes referee, people much smarter than me.

This is me. I’m a manager for one of the largest tech consultancies. Kind of fell into the role, but it’s been pretty lucrative so far. Easy to burn out in this arena, so I may make the move over to one of the FAANG companies in the future (maybe in a product management role).

Can you tell me what tcs is? I’m in development for a public company. We hit the layoff time of year and instead of laying off employees, they “re-homed” them to tcs so they didn’t have to announce layoffs publicly. Sounded pretty shitty to me but had never heard of tcs before. I’d be pissed if they contracted me to tcs instead of laying me off with a severance.

I’m a .NET C#\mvc\sql developer. My problem is I’m a jack of all trades and a master of bone. Makes job searching less than fun. Been on the lookout for the right gif to jump ship to but haven’t found the right offer yet. Been with the company for 17 years and got my degree about 12 years in and got into IT a year after that. The suckiest part about IT is it’s really difficult to get an opportunity without experience.

Maybe my side gig, but not my full time. Curious though, why do you say that?

As a former PMP /CMP I managed a lot of I T shite and people, but it was tiresome and I was always flying everywhere.
My dog and Cat didn’t know me when I came home and my trophy wife fricked every contractor and CC member in the neighborhood.

But good luck with you in this great choice!

B.S. in Geography. Got a job on campus during college helping out in the computer lab.

Got a desktop support job out of college and then jumped to a different company where I went from...

Sr Desktop -> Server Admin -> LAN Admin -> Supervisor -> Manager -> Asst. Director -> Director (took about 14 yrs).

Left that company and took a step back for some better work/life balance. I'm currently the IT Manager for a small department and never really have to answer my phone or emails after 5pm. There isn't any real upward mobility unless I leave IT but the pay is nice and I enjoy having my evenings and weekends uninterrupted by work.

Might just stay here until I retire.

KPMG and TCS are well known SAP/Ariba headhunters. They go from corporation to corporation to absorb their SAP operations, successfully. They'll initially be called in for a SOX audit, or some other formal routine audit, and one of the audit findings is "we noticed you are spending X million a year in your SAP operations, we can take that over for half the price, and improve your systems, and remove your audit liability for all of these operations" and next thing you know.... all your SAP people are looking up COBRA benefits.

TCS is probably the largest, but certainly not the only company that specializes in "re-homing" or "re-badging" IT operations from large companies, and then they keep those re-badged people on long enough for their own people back in India to learn the ropes, then TCS lays you off.

Got hired on in Accounting where I work and after a few weeks of fixing people's computers and printers, they put me over in IT.
