waiters tip out the bartender based on sales I think...so if they get bad tips they still have to tip the bartender

True. My two fave watering holes in BR, I tend to round up to an even number and tip very well(recently my credit card has contacted me b/c the tip was more than the drinks) b/c I'm usually not paying full price for everything.

I'm a former server who tips on meal and tax. But honestly, I can see where you would just tip on the meal. Wtf does the tax have to do with anything?

Give some examples.
$10 drink = $2 tip
$5 drink = $1 tip
$100 tab = $20 tip

I'm not ordering tough shite. If I get a $18 neat bourbon, I'm only going to tip a dollar. It's a three second pour, frick giving someone a few extra bucks just because I want top shelf.

Probably not.
And I didn't say tipping is antiquated, because I believe there should be some incentive for better service, but basing on a percentage of the meal cost is a bit antiquated, and doesn't always accurately reflect the effort and value of the server.
Example, my wife and I go out with another couple. We order two appetizers, and all order entrees... great, no problem. We order a $50 bottle of wine and the other couple drinks water all night. The server is going through just as much trouble keeping their waters filled as it is to pour the wine, but they aren't going to tip for that server's efforts to keep the water filled, while we are expected to tip in the $10 range for the wine. Fair?
I'm not saying I have a better solution (other than possibly doing away with tipping altogether and paying servers legit wages) but basing it on a percentage is really a cockeyed way of going about it.

You do have a point here. If food and beverage inflation outpaces normal inflation then the wages of service industry employees would increase at a rate faster than inflation.
And I generally tip pretty well but I have little patience for service industry employees who complain about their tips since pretty much all of them don't declare much of their cash tips anyway.

Exactly.
I think that the poster I was replying to isn't correct in his assumption he tips more to bartenders...

That is completely dependent on what kind of bartender we are talking about. Staff at a restaurant? Absolutely. That's pretty easy stuff if you know how to make drinks.
Being behind the bar at a busy, late-night establishment in a college town? That shite is ball-busting.
