I just dont understand why everyone is such a cheap arse. If you cant afford to tip when you go out to eat or go to a bar, then you shouldnt go. Get mcdonalds and get a case of beer... or cook yourself. Me having worked as a bartender when I was younger, Id get pissed when id have regulars who wouldnt tip worth a shite and come all the time and expect great service. You go to the end of the line when you come in. Thats the philosophy for people who have worked in the service industry.

I hate our tipping culture but the truth is you wouldn't want to pay what they actually would have to charge you. Profit margins are very thin in a restaurant as the costs can be absurd.

You're not hurting the restaurant at all, just the lowly server who relies on tips to pay bills. You're so rational and enlightened.
The guy has a point. Not tipping is a crappy thing to do, but why is it his responsibility as the customer to ensure that the the wait staff is compensated? It really is insane how this works.
The only reason that it remains this way is because people like you and me have taken ownership of a responsibility that should belong to the restaurant.
