The metric system of measurement will dominate in the next 10 years as more precision is required.

We have no choice. Only the U.S., Liberia and Thailand use the antiquated Imperial measuring system. The rest of the world uses metric. International trade is forcing us to use the metric system. That’s a good thing.

BTW, our economic power is forcing the rest of the world to use English. That’s also a good thing.

The metric system was being forced on us starting back in the '70s if my memory serves me right. It was said we would be completely metric in a few years. Some companies jumped on it. Automobile comes to mind. There was such push back that the progress stopped and even backed up a bit. Ever since then we have the mixture we have now.

My prediction: You will see 100% metric when they take our guns away and the New World Order starts to control us. These 2 things will be facilitated by the millennials and whatever groups are close on their heels. Liberal teachings have these youngsters thinking we need a more socialist society.

I was in the sixth grade when they started teaching metric in school. 1979 I think. We were supposed to go full metric within 2 years. We learned what we were taught, then never was required to use it ever again.

I will say that it is easier to use the metric side of a measuring tape for no other reason then the marks are closer together.

I still remember that silliness on MLB outfield signs.

Somehow a 150 meter homer doesn't sound like such a shot, even though it would be

Back in the '70s, highway speed limit signs had standard and metric on them. I think it was during the Carter administration. The fricking speed limit was 55mph Nationwide at that time and 88kph wasn't any faster. It think for a model year or two, car speedometers were only in metric. (Maybe the metric figures were much larger, with smaller standard figures)

I don't think any of that is true.

That shite didn't last. Your average American had no desire to change, even if it meant having a uniform standard with most of the rest of the world. If anything had to change, the typical American thought the rest if the world should adjust to our system of measurement.

I think all of that is true.

Mostly true. The smart ones in science have used metric for decades.

I can remember being in elementary school back in the early 1970's learning the metric system. The teacher told us that by the time we graduated high school, the U.S. would have converted to it completely, thus we had to know it.

In Engineering school one of the earliest lessons I remember is converting multiple imperial units into metric and vice versa. Statics and thermodynamics in particular mandate this.

Ever think that the people who request metric the most are the ones who actually need to convert unitsm

How old are you? If you were around in the '70s, or if you were familiar with US history, you may recall the Arab Oil Embargo and the energy crisis in 1972/73. Congress passed a law on 1974 limiting the speed limit to 55 mph in an attempt to reduce fuel consumption. That law stayed in effect until the late '80s. It was then modified to allow speed limits to be increased to 65 mph in rural areas. It was eventually repealed in the mid-90s.

All true. Look it up.

There was also a law passed in 1975 to convert from the Imperial Standard to the Metric System. I assure you that highway speed limit signs all read both 55 mph and 88 kph. Not only did the Auto industry have speedometers that showed KPH, but they also stopped at 85 mph/135kph. I guess the thinking was if the maximum speed limit 55mph no ody would dare drive over 85mph.

All true. Look it up.

There were a couple of "test" parishes in Louisiana that had street signs in KPH, one of which was Lafourche. I remember driving through the Nicholls State campus with my father and him laughing at the signs, saying "Half the people in Thibodaux just learned English, now we expect them to learn the metric system?"
