There already is, by bus. And it'll take 13 hours (315ish miles). Similar to routes in Europe (Frankfurt to Wroclaw in Western Poland; 9 hours by train, 10 hours by bus. (450 miles)
Or you can fly SWA for $300 and be in Midland in four hours.
There is a misconception that train travel outside of urban areas is very cheap in the EU/UK. It's not. Manchester to London by train is between $90 and $150 and takes 2 hours. Or, you can fly starting at $134 and it takes an hour and five minutes. So, even though you have an extensive rail network available, what do you think most people traveling are going to choose to do?

My opinion (and I know that it's extreme) is that we should have a national high speed rail system that spans the country and connects at each city over 100k. Metro areas can have their own system that connects municipalities if they are large enough and have the funds.
Yes, it would be extremely difficult and costly. There are land rights, naturally occurring obstacles, existing industries that would be affected, and many other factors that would make it difficult. But it would pay handsomely in the long run
It's only ridiculous because we don't currently have it. If we had a high speed rail system instead of the interstate and someone proposed that we dismantle the rail system and build paved asphalt all across the country so that everyone could drive individually it would also sound absurd. Also fricking idiotic.
