I don't have kids yet, but when I do they won't be required to do sports. However they will be required to find something that interests them and pursue it. Whether that be sports, theater, music, a school club, etc. Its important for them to be part of a team of some sort, even if it isn't an athletic team.

My parents didn't require my two brothers and I to play sports. All of us did, but we lived in small towns that, in the 60's & 70's, didn't have baseball until Little League and didn't have football and basketball teams until junior high.
Back then we played sandlot baseball and football nearly every day. We rode our bikes all over town. We played army and cowboys in the woods. We were very active and it was always much more fun than playing on a real team. Our games were very competitive. We would have fights occasionally. We would go across town and play against the kids from that side of town. You better believe we wanted to kick their butts.
Doesn't seem like kids get to play on their own now. They just practice and play real games. That would get old fast, especially if someone was making you do it.
I'm glad I grew up when I did. There were only three channels on our one TV and my mom was watching soap operas. The only days we weren't outside all day were rainy ones. We knew when we had to come home and tried our best to make it back by then. We built forts, bridges, ramps for our bikes in the woods around our neighborhood. I think compared to today's kids, we were little Huck Finns.

Disagree.

I think you should make them do some sort of extraciricular activity and make them finish whatever it is thy choose.

Yes, some mandatory physical activity should be required. It goes beyond having them be good or great at a sport, but teaches them valuable concepts and promotes an overall active and healthy lifestyle.
There are literally zero cons to putting your child in some type of physical activity.
Now, this does not mean they cannot be more academically focused or focus on music, drawing etc, but I believe it is highly beneficial for kids to be active at a young age. Regardless if they will become a pro at any sport.

Is this question about sport or soccer? Let's not confuse the two.
Posted on 5/7/16 at 12:11 pm to rebeloke
yes
they can learn a lot of life lessons by playing sports. even if they suck, they are young enough that it doesnt matter as much and they can go their own way in a year or so, into what they like.
they can also gain some friends for life.

Yes, at least to try.
And try every thing!
There is great value in doing something that you suck at, even if just for a season. Teaches a lot.

One sport and one art .. Till the age of 12.
Ok if they don't like the sport, just find another.
Emphasize your (and your child s) strengths. Strengthen your weaknesses.
A well rounded child is a good goal.

Although I don't think sports should be required, I do feel like kids should have some sort of team building or socialization activities besides school in their lives.
Sports teaches valuable lessons in life that most kids do not get at home.

A generation ago I would say that to a point I think it is okay to make them play a sport. Now, I'm not sure if sports at a young age have the same benefits as a generation ago.
- People have taken away scores to games that teach kids to win the right way and lose the right way by declaring that it sniffles their emotions or some other bullshite.
- Team sports teach a sense of teamwork which is important in literally aspect of life and you don't get that off a computer screen or tv.
- Sports also allow kids to get outside and play for health benefits and teaches them to get outside.
