I will make my kid play a couple sports early on just so he can learn something about being on a team. Working together stuff like that. But if they play and hate it or want to do other things I won't care at all.

Force them to try different things? Sure. However, if it's clear they are not having a good time and don't enjoy it then the parent should adjust accordingly and keep looking for other activities that do interest the child so that he/she doesn't become a couch potato..

Plenty of ways to do that and not play sports.

It is important for a child's development to do something but it doesn't matter what. They get just as much out of band, drama, dance etc...

Just let them do something they like.

My daughters are in the band and my son plays sports. They all benefit from being a part of something bigger than they are.

I think so...my parents told me I had to take a full course load and a fine art all through high school if I wanted to play sports too. I had no problem with that. If that's okay, the opposite should be true

Every kid who doesn't have physical limitations should be encouraged to participate in a team sport. Doesn't matter how well you play. Being part of a team early in life is very important. As they get older and competition kicks in then they can stop if they don't like it. Stop with the year round sports before age 15 too. That's not helping anyone.

LOL at the dads in this thread forcing their kids into sports.

I remember the psychopath dads who forced their kids to play football in high school. Those kids were fricking miserable and resented their dads for it.

Whenever a sport is available, ask your kid if they'd like to try it. End it there. Don't be a dick.

Encouraged, yes. I did not want to play basketball but my Dad convinced that it would help me in other sports. It did help with footwork development in my case. Thanks Dad!

My God man, your logic is pitiful... lopoppahirum fought hipoppalorum to a draw... each parent is sovereign, not the school... If a parent requires X, doesnt mean Y will qualify... We dont have a draft for military for similar reasons. But you might be on to something... require minorities to play sports or ROTC or work farm

I don't think you can force them to play a sport. I do, however, think you should force them have some sort of activity year round.

This is how it was for us growing up. You had to be doing something after school. You weren't allowed to just come home and watch tv or jerkoff. Everyone in my family likes sports so we played a variety of sports, but my cousin had the same rules and she was in band.

It's about being active and around people. It's about learning to commit to something. And it's about not being a lazy worthless shite.

I wouldn't require my kids to play organized sports, but I have always played sports with them at home since they were small. It is very important to do active stuff with kids to develop their motor skills, physical abilities, coordination, confidence, etc. Neighborhood kids whose parents haven't thrown footballs or baseballs with them are very lacking.

Lol.. Like the time when I was a sophomore in high school and did the following in practice.. #Iverson...

Practicing corner kicks I caught the goalie's knee to my face while diving for a header. The result was a concussion, 14 stitches above my right eye, broken cheek bone, broken orbital socket, broken nose and lost my right front tooth. American football, hockey and rugby are collision sports. Soccer is a contact sport and serious injuries happen all the time.

Doesn't have to be a "sport" but I do think that the more activities you get your children involved in , the less time they have to do dumb shite , be lazy (video games) , and get into trouble. Just keep trying until they find an activity or 2 they like and go from there.
