Just curious because my dogs seem to start acting weird when the coyotes start howling in the evening.

Yes. They can also innately tell the differences between women and men.

For example, a dog that is afraid of men would start freaking out if this came around

If your dog is of any size, coyotes aren't that dangerous.

Dangerous? I have housecats that run off those scrawny, matted frickers.

We live out in the boonies. We hear coyotes yelping outside all the time. Our German Shepherd will try to open the backdoor himself to get outside

You realize coyotes, especially in groups, are very dangerous to domestic animals right?

How big? I have two brittany spaniels that are 35 to 40 pounds and one brittany that is about 55 pounds. I'm always a little nervous when I'm out in the field/woods with my smaller dogs.

Your dog is realizing you pussified it and is wanting to join its wild brethren.

My golden retriever chased off a few coyotes easily once. I was scared when he took off out of our fence going after them but he handled his business.

And he’s largely a giant pussy of a guard dog.

This is what happens when you let your dog watch Coyote Ugly. Does he also get nervous when you bring home Chinese food? He may just be in tune with the dark side of humans.
