Sometimes I downvote uncontroversial, not-unpopular posts just to see if others will downvote them too. It works a surprising amount of the time: people are way too easily influenced by what others think

It’s really something how the vast majority of posts get just one or two votes, if any. But certain posts are like throwing chum, and it seems like out nowhere emerge all those silent rantards chomping at those vote buttons.
You fall into a sense there’s just a few dozen of us here at any moment, until those certain posts where those beneath the surface show themselves.

It would be fascinating to study how people react to the same post given different upvote to downvote ratios. Like take an example post and have 5 upvotes to 34 downvotes on half the subjects and 34 upvotes to 5 downvotes on the other half and see how that affects their vote.
I’ll look at a post of mine and it will have 0 upvotes and 2 downvotes, then I’ll check back half an hour later and it will be something like 41 upvotes to 4 downvotes.
